est, Chesley and Wine-ham com-
peted.
The first prize and trophy spon-
sored by the Edighoffer Depart-
ment Store went to Mrs, R„ Law-
rence's rink :of Forest,. Mrs, Edna
Overholt of Godericb took second
and Mrs. P, Bruder of Hanover,
Wingham won the remainder of
the prizes. Mrs. J.1VIacIntyre with:
Mrs. G. Godkin and Mrs. Elsie,
Haney came 4th; Miss A. Mitchell
with Mrs. W. Brown and Mrs.
Mary Cleland took fifth. The sixth
was won by Mrs. J. Kerr, Mrs. L;
Patterson, and Mrs. H. Aitcheson.

PLAN FOR PROJECT
AT HOWICK FAIR
'bORRIE—The Women's Insti-
tute had two guest speakers at
the recent - meeting at the home
of -Mrs, Glad. Edgar; Mrs. Gray-
son Richmond, president- of the
East Huron District paid her
annual visit and chose to speak on
"Health", mentioning the courses
on home unrsing a.n,d medicine
available to all Institutes.' She
told of the neccessities in home
medicine cabinets and stated that
alcoholism and mental illness are
two of the greatest problems in
Canada,. In the infant mortality
rate Canada stands 13th which
might be inproved.
Mrs. Wm. Cato, a Canadian
born of Japanese parents and a
resident of con. 10 Howick, was
introduced by Mrs. Cecil. Wilson
and in a charming, informal man-
ner told of Japanese festivals and
customs and displayed kimonas;
dolls, fans, chopsticks and answer-
ed questions. Both ladies were
presented with gifts.
Mrs. Stewart Strong discussed
the motto "Administer the parental
love pat a bit harder and lower
down for best results", quoting
the old adage "Spare the• rod and
spoil the child". She said that a
child had, a tragic time ahead of
him :if his home training had
lacked discipline.
Roll call was answered by nam-
ing something money can't buy.
Mrs. Glenn Johnston, the presi-
dent, was in charge of business.
The Institute will give $6 for
prizes for the Howick Fall Fair.
Mrs. Willard Peel, Mrs. Russell
Adams and Mrs. Harry Rhame
were appointed a committee to
arrange for the Institute project
at the Fair which will be "Grand-
mother Expects- a Visitor" in. keep-
ing with the 100th anniversary. It
Was announced that Achievement
Day would be held in Wingham,
Aug, 25th, and that Miss Bette
Tillman is the new Home Econ-
omist for Huron County. Mrs.
Leonard Sanderson and Mrs. Clar-
•ence Stokes are the committee to
plan a bus trip to Collingwood the
first week in Stepmber. It will, be
open, to others besides the mem-
bers.
Mrs. Cecil Wilson and Mrs. Stew-
art Strong sang two numbers
accompanied by Mrs. DeWitt
Adams, Mrs. Wm. Cato and Helen
Adams held the lucky 'numbers in
the Dutch auction, Mrs. Harold
Keil, Mrs. Clarence Snarling and
Mrs. Morley Johnston, assisted by
the hostess, served refreshments.

ACHIEVEMENT DAY
BELGRAVE—Thee fourth meet-
ing of the Belgrave Garden Gals
was held on August 10th at the
home of the leader, Mrs. J. H.
Irwin,.' The meeting opened with
the 4-It pledge and motto followed
by the minutes of the last meet-
ing, The roll call being "Bring
two vegetables of one kind", was
answered by ten members.
The leader and members discus-
sed insects which attacked the
vegetables, Mrs. Pardon explained
the preparation of vegetables for
Achievement Day, A class of
beets was judged Mid the leader
then gave :ideas about hoW to
judge vegetables, The home assign-
ments are: Complete all garden
records; write club stories and
complete record book; prepare for
