It also is •one of the outstanding agricultural districts in the whole of Canada. Wawanosh bears an Indian name. The story is, that a party of early land surveyors, while staking out the township, came in contact with a tithe of Mohawk Indians who were camped along 'the east shore of Lake Huron. The leader of 'this band.was named Chief Wawanosh, This tribe was friendly, which was unesual, for at that time the red- skins were very hostile to the white man; they very much re.; • sented his invasion of their domain. He supplied the lime for the build- ing of practically all the houses and barn foundations for. miles around, Many of these magnificent hoines, as we see today, are a work of art, the like of which is lost to the modern generation, These fine buildings stand as a mon- ument to a generation of men and women who had the foresight to build upon a rock. May their names live forever. Belgrave, for a great many years, also boasted an agricultural fall fair which was a great success while it lasted, but was discontinued about the year 1002. Coming back again to Wawanosh, when the county was first survey- ed Wawanosh proper was com- posed of an area ' of 12 miles square, but was afterwards divided into two separate townships, East and West. In that twelve-mile area, up until the turn of the 'cen- tury, there were 12 churches, 8 Orange Lodges, and one separate R.C. school, The township of Wa- wanosh has played a great. part in producing men of distinction. 'Mere have been at least 5 clergy- men, 4 doctors, many teachers, and at least one civil engineer born in the township, To name a few, there were: • Rev. Austin Budge, presbyterian; Rev. Wm, Taylor and Rev, E. Taylor, United; Rev. Father Brophey, Rev, Father O'Con- nor, R.C. priests; Dr, Albeit Me- Dowell, Dr. Henry Tisdale, Dr. Harold Robinson and Dr. Wilfred Robinson; and Roy Patterson, County Engineer. s-- n U U U U U U JUST IOW AT INgE OO NIKO CAR BUYS For Wedding Gifts or Any Gift .
