0.rade II Teacher ..„
Took .4iincl Girl
Last Aprili en Ontario .School
was faced with the problem of
providing for the education of a
blind child in a regular second
grade class, This was not the first
time this situation has occurred
because a few 'blind children have.
spent ,two or more years in the
Primary grades with sighted child,
real in ether schools.
These cases have .developed be-:
.cause the child, (HI admission to
residential school for the blind, has.
reacted emotionallly to such a de-
gree that it was advisable for him
to be returned to his home,. There,
through ovtilL3Ohei efforts oofxi
provided
ftea n official
offthe
With home .instruction through the
local school board. In addition the •
C.N,T,B, provides a teacher of
Braille. In a few eases the home
instruction teacher has agreed to
admit, the Caine to her class on an
experimental basis, Some of these
experiments have been continued
for as long as three years, In many
cases the child has become emo-
tionally adjusted and has returned
to the residential school.
Barbara came from one of, the
two states in the U.S.A. where the
state department of education pro-
vides two types of education for
blind children. One of these is the
usual residential school, the other
is the resource teacher, The Re-
source Teacher teaches Braille, the
system of raised dots by which the
blind can read and write, Braillle
writing can 'be done on a brass
"so-coned" slate in which the
necessary dots can be raised by
punching through as many of the
six holes as are necessary to form
the letter, or symbol. A Brailler
is another machine like a type-
writei and is used for the same
purpose.
The resource teacher visits, the
parents and the teacher to supply
information, demonstrate teaching
methods and assist both with their
problems, She also supplies read-
ers and texts printed in Braille.
Barbara's parents expected the
same services which had been
available at home. They were
very much 'disturbed at the idea of
eeptling their child. to .4 residential
/oheol As their stay In Canada was
expected to be less than a year,
Barbara's mother dismissed the
problem with the .school principal
and the school Inspector. The
Grade If teacher agreed to admit:
Barbara to her elms. The mother
undertook .to put into Braille the:
stories in the reader, the .exercise
prepared by the teacher and to
write in the translation of .her .
daughter's exorcises when she
completed them on the Brailler,
At the end of .a few weeks, it
became Apparent that the mother
had undertaken too much and an
organization which takes particu-
lar' interest in exceptional children
purchased the
the
2 Reader in
Braille from, the American Printing
House For The Blind. This reliev-,
.eci the mother of a very heavy
daily chore, In school Barbara
behaved normally in every way, 4iT
swering questions and making'
comrreets In I11 e RAMP w,,y nethe
others. She was above-average in
ability. A girl from next door
guided her to and from school, •
In June she was promoted to
Grade 3 and a Grade 3 Braille
Reader was supplied for Septeinber,
Her teachers were very pleased
with her progress and happy over
their success in providing for her ,
needs.
She has now returned to her
native state where she will neve
the services of a resource 'teacher,
During her short stay in Ontario,
although she is blind, she has been
instructed in a regular grade class
in a suburban area, The teachers,
principal and the inspector involv-
ed deserve the thanks of all of tis.•.
for continuing for this blind girl
the sort of schooling she needed
and for their humanity in eundere
standing and sharing the problems
with her parents.
