Summer Swim :Tips ' -
-Canadians, have more than half
of the world's fresh water to diye
into. What a pity that swimming
must produce stories almost daily
during the summer of drownings
and near drownings.
Let's all practise a few water
safety rules this summer, and help
to cut down on the number of,
swimmers who become statistics.
Wait two hours after eating
before going in the water,
All 'nonowimmers must wear
life jackets when playing in or
around the water.
AlWays swim with at least two'
other people-never alone.
VVhen• swimming- from a boat, be.
sure the motor is turned off and'
the boat anchored. A swirling pro-
peller is extremely dangerous to a
swimmer, while a drifting boat
may suddenly be beyond the reach
of tired arms.
Though the urge is great, never
dive over the side unless you are
certain that the water is deep
enough and clear of obstacles.
If „ you have no landing ladder,-
be sure everyone swimming from
a boat can climb back into it,
again. To avoid capsizing, only one
person at a time should clamber
aboard. If the boat is small, climb
only over the stern or bow.
The Canadian Red Cross
vitally interested in the question
of water safety. It has published

Milk Cartons -
Don't throw out those.quart milk
.cartons. They will amaze- you with
'their ;usefulness 'in the great ont-
doors. •
- A few idays before you leave on
that camping trip or upriver
C`i'U' fie, fill the milk cartons With
water and pop them into the
freezer in your refrigerator.
They make a handy ice supply,
are easy to arrange in your cooler,
ana the wax cartons hold the
water When the ice melts. And you
finish off with a nide clean supply
of fresh, cold water.
Forest Fires
'There are three kinds of forest
fires: ground, surface and crown.
Of these, the crown fire is by far
the worst and occurs in predorni-
"nantly evergreen forests.
Winds sometimes whip crown
fires to a spreading speed of 40 to
50 miles per hour, Even birds
Can't fly that fast. That means all
Wildlife is consumed. SO be care-
ful-very careful-when you're in
or near the forest,
