Harold Victor Kerney, Postmas-
ter of Brussels, passed away awl,
denlY July 14th in his 63rd Year.
Mr. Kerney was the only son of
Francis Kerney. and E1Speth
He was born in Wingham, later
moving with, his parents tq Morris
Township,Hen e
sted in the 161st battal-
ion in Wingham in 1915 and served
in England and to the end of the
war- in France, Belgium and later
with the Army of Occupation in
Germany, He reeceived the Mili-
tary Medal for bravery in action
at Valeneiennes and was commis-
sioned as lieutenant and honour-
ably discharged in November, 1919,
He was eemployed by the' Essex
Packing Company y in Windsor as
salesman for many years,
He' was married to Julia Oretta
Parkes in 1934, and was a member
of the Masonic,Order,
During the years between the
wars he continued an active inter-
est in the Canadian Army Reserve.
At the outbreak of World War II
he enlisted as lieutenant in the
Veterans' Guard of Canada and
was promoted to major and given
command of No, 21 Company at
Halifax, N.S. His company con-
ducted escort duty of prisoners of
war and security work from coast
to coast. He was' made a member
of the Order of the British Empire
by the Covennor-Geneial of Canada
for outstanding 'service.
He returned to Brussels and was
appointed postmaster in 1947, a
position which he filled efficiently.
He has since continued his interest
in the Canadian. Legion and was
always active in promoting the best
interest of any worthwhile com-
munity enterprise.
Funeral service was held at the
D, A. Rann funeral home in Brus-
sels on July 17th at 2 p.m., and
was conducted by Rev. Williamson,
assisted by Rev. L. Brown of the
United Church. Interment was
made in Brussels Cemetery. where
a military service was conducted at
the grave, the Pipe Band playing
a-slow march and a guard of hon-
our formed- by the Veterans, a fir-
ing party under the •ocommand of
Sgt. Gowling, bugler Fred Bailey of
Listowel and Rev, Fred Jewell
(Padre) participating.
The flag-draped casket was
borne by postal associates, Earl
Somers, Harvey Dennis, Norman
Pfeifer,, William Speir, S. C. Fox,
William' Gander. Flower bearers
were Roy Cousins, Max Oldfield,
Jack McWhirter, Harold Thomas.'
He had a very warm and friend-
ly personality and an outstanding •
gift for friendship and will be sin-
cerely mourned by his wife and a
'wide circle of friends. '
