Wawanosh joins in support of Wheels Away West Wawanosh Council at its Dec. 1 meeting passed a resolution to assume responsibility of their share of the 1992 operating expenses of Wheels Away, based on the percentage of users from West Wawanosh who use the service. Wheels Away provides accessible transportation for the elderly and people with disabilities. West Wawanosh can be added to a list of supporting municipalities: Wingham, Lucknow, Grey, Morris, Kinloss and East Wawanosh Townships. The corporation would, however, like to see support from the remaining municipalities with residents using the service. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) has been providing ongoing funding for municipal transit systems since 1964. In the 1970’s MTO recognized the transportation needs and problems of people with physical disabilities. According to the Municipal Act, transportation systems are recognized as being as important as sewage, garbage collection, hydro-electric, roads, police and fire departments. MTO subsidies are based on a cost sharing arrangement with municipalities, according to a press release from Wheels Away. The majority of transportation systems in Ontario, are funded ONLY by MTO, user fees and municipal dollars, the release states. Also, the North Huron Special Transit Corporation (Wheels Away) is unique in that it seeks financial support from service clubs and United Way, in order to ease the pressure on municipal dollars. Gloria Workman, chairperson for Wheels Away says that municipal ities in North Huron and South Bruce Counties are fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in a collaborative transportation system. The costs would be enormous if each municipality provided their own transportation system, she said. 10 euchre tables in play Ten tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the W.I.
