Brussels Atoms win twice Thanks to great goaltending by Stephen Oldfield and an all-round team effort, the Brussels WOAA Atoms houseleague team skated away with two wins and a tie this weekend at a Howick tournament. In their first game on Friday night, they came up against a close ly matched Wingham team. The opposition struck early with a goal in the first period, but the Brussels team held them back from scoring more. A second period goal by Darrell Dalton, assisted by Joel Kellington, tied things up in the second where it stayed for the remainder of the game. The second game for Brussels was at 8 a.m., Sunday. Despite the early morning wake-up the team was at the ready scoring a total of four to Minto's two. Trevor Wilson copped a hat trick in this game, scoring two in the second and one in the third. Minto started things off in the first, but with 40 seconds remaining in the period, Kellington delivered unassisted. The Brussels team never gave up a goal in the second, but added the two by Wilson, the second of which was assisted by Ryan Smith. Minto narrowed the edge in the third then Wilson charged on for his second unassisted goal to give Brussels a two-point win. At 10 a.m., Brussels faced off against Walkerton, whom they also defeated 4-2. Joshua Gropp, off a play by Mark Stevens and Jason Armstrong, drove home the first goal of the game giving Brussels an early lead, only to have Walkerton tie things up at 2:57 in the first. Wilson, assisted by Kellington put Brussels once again in the lead halfway through the second. Then Matthew McLellan and Tyler Bragg combined to set up Sam Zahnd, who nudged in an insurance goal. Just one minute later Gropp, off a play by Stevens set up Wilson who drove in the fourth goal of the game. Walkerton kept the Brussels' team from scoring any in the third plus added another of their own, but it wasn't enough to close the gap- The Brussels Novices played host to Elma-Logan on Saturday, Dec. 5 in WOAA hockey action. Brian McNichol opened the scoring for Blyth four minutes into the game on a powerplay by taking a centering pass from Ryan Chamney and tucking the puck upstairs over the fallen Zurich netminder. Jason Rutledge put Blyth up by two, with four minutes remaining in the first as he one- timed a drop pass from Brian McNichol. Blyth took control of the game in the second by scoring three unanswered goals for a 5-0 lead. Brian McNichol started the second period explosion with a breakaway goal after some clearing passes from Christopher Howson and Jonathan Collins. Ryan Chamney then went to work as he finished off a Henry Bos rush with his first goal of the game. Before the period ended, Chamney scored his second of the game as he slid the puck along the ice between the goalie's legs to finish off his breakaway. Chamney continued his scoring binge in the third as he scored Blyth's final two goals. A three-way passing play from Christopher Howson and Jason Rutledge set up Chamney's fourth goal of the game with yet another nice pass. If there was ever a game in which “The Leekster” deserved a shut out, it was this one as he played a crafty game between the pipes for Blyth. Unfortunately he was denied the honour with one and a half minutes remaining as Zurich broke the goose egg with a power play goal. Blyth increased their season record to 14-1 with this 7-1 road victory.
