Classes visit Centre
by Shawna Walker, Zoey Onn,
Jennifer Brigham and
Abigail Ramirez
The grades one and two classes
recently went to the East Wawa-
nosh Conservation Area. They took
a walk around the woods and saw
many kinds of animals. They
learned about beech trees and
squirrels. They played games like
finding homes of different animals
and also played puzzles and made
leaf rubbings. The classes were told
about hibernation and migration.
They also learned about the signs
of winter.
Twenty-six grade two-three
Halloween characters visited the
senior citizens at Queens Villa on
Friday, Oct. 30. They introduced
themselves, sang songs read poems
and discussed the costumes they
were wearing. They saw two
witches during the visit too!
The grade fives have just started
“The Secret Garden” by Frances
Hodgson Burnett. Because the
students have been busy looking
after the flowers in their room, they
are very eager to find out what the
secret garden really is.
On November 11 at the Blyth
Public School a Remembrance Day
service will be held.
Also the library will be having a
book fair from Nov. 24-26.
GRADE ONE
Grade one loved Halloween and
all the activities. Nicole Procter
liked going out for trick or treat.
Ashley Whaling liked dressing up.
Chantelle Mason liked seeing
pumpkins. Casey MacLeod liked to
have people ask you to do tricks.
Tim Van Camp and Kristen Palmer
liked the candy. Cody McGee liked
to try and trick people.
GRADE THREE/FOUR
Everyone in the class had a good
time on Halloween, remembering
to be polite and thank people for
their treats.
The students are very busy with
their work. In math, grade three is
learning to write the standard and
expanded forms of larger numbers.
Grade four is learning how to
estimate answers to the nearest 10.
Most have completed their
Halloween booklets and are
enjoying reading them to the rest of
the class.
GRADE EIGHT
The students are working hard in
math, learning formulas and
applying them to challenging
problems in surface area. The
science unit “Soil and Plant
Ecology” is complete and they are
beginning “Investigating Living
Things”.
Rhythm in music, mono
chromatics in art, and volleyball in
Physical Education are the Arts
topics this week.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Mr. Bartlett has the Senior House
League Volleyball games well
underway. Each team has played at
least one game. The standings are
as follows: Cougars, 4; Golden
Hawks, 4; Eagles, 4; Westerns, 3;
Bruins, 3; Bulldogs, 1.
“Save The Environment” is the
school's focus this year. To
increase knowledge of composting
and to decrease the amount of
garbage, students have begun
several projects. First, they
researched various topics, made
posters and displays for the fair.
Second, a composter has been set
up at school to help reduce the
garbage.
Third, on Tuesday, Oct. 23, Chris
Lee from the Hensall Compost
Facility gave an excellent slide
presentation about how the facility
began and is working at the present
time. He left a video to watch in the
classrooms as well as an invitation
to visit the site whenever it is
convenient.
Fourth, from Nov. 2-13, each
class will have their garbage
weighed to see who are the biggest
offenders. On Friday, Nov. 6 there
will be a “garbageless lunch day”
where everyone in the school tries
to bring a lunch where there will be
no garbage left over. Students are
working to Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle, and/or Refuse.

meeting
by Lesley Elliott
On Monday, Nov. 2 we had our
final 4-H meeting at the home of
Gabrielle McLaughlin's. Roll call
was “suggest a use for leftovers
from eggs, egg shells or egg
cartons.” One suggestion was to
compost egg shells and plant seeds
in the egg cartons.
Deli chicken salad was the dish
we prepared but most people didn't
care for it.
The achievement day will be held
in Belgrave on Nov. 23 with many
other clubs involved. On behalf of
the girls I would like to take this
opportunity to thank our leaders
Gabrielle McLaughlin, Cathy
Bridge and Angela Pelke for being
so patient and helpful throughout
this club.
have planted numerous berry
producing shrubs such as Autumn
Olive and Dogwood. The middle
section contains various nut trees
including: Red Oak, Pin Oak,
Swamp White Oak, Hickory, and
Buckeye. The next step in our plan
will be to plant a variety of
evergreen trees.
