Yuills tour Algonquin Park
Last weekend, Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Yuill accompanied John
and Marie McIntosh to Sprucedale,
north of Huntsville to visit their
son, Mike McIntosh. They enjoyed
a drive through Algonquin Park
and the surrounding colourful area.
The preceding Friday, Mrs. Yuill
returned from a week-long visit
with her daughter, Elizabeth Feeley
in Chicago. Mrs. Feeley was
participating in a conference there.
Mrs. Mabel Wheeler
accompanied by Mrs. Edith Swan,
Brucefield, visited with friends in
Watkins Glen, New York last
week.
Mrs. May Edwards of Wales
returned home on Saturday, Sept.
26 after spending three weeks with
her sister and brother-in-law Rev.
and Mrs. Peter Tucker.
Knox UCW learn about
funeral arrangements
Knox United Church Women
held their general meeting on Sept.
24 with Mr. Doug McBurney,
funeral director, as guest speaker.
He gave much helpful information
on the laws and regulations
affecting the making of funeral
arrangements.
WMS meeting
opens with
hymn
The Belgrave WMS held their
meeting at the home of Mrs. Alice
Nicholson on Monday, Sept. 28.
Mrs. Nicholson opened with a
call to worship and the hymn
"Come Ye Thankful People Come"
was read in unison. Mrs. Lottie
Scott read the scripture and Mrs.
Nicholson led in prayer. The
secretary's report was given by
Mrs. Margaret Siertsema and the
treasurer's report by Mrs. Ivy
Cloakey. The roll call was
something we are thankful for. It
was noted that sick and shut-in
visits numbered 23.
Mrs. Cloakey read a poem, "The
Night Before Jesus Came". Mrs.
Freda Scott read a poem on
Thanksgiving. Mrs. Siertsema read
an exceipt from the book "A Lively
Story", concerning the first
organization of WMS groups
around this area in the 1800s.
The collection was received and
dedicated. Mrs. Nicholson read a
poem on Fall, and a story, "It's
Easy To Be Thankful". The
hostess served lunch and a social
time was enjoyed.
Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs.
Cloakey joined the WMS bus tour
on Tuesday to the Japanese Culture
Centre in Toronto for a meal and a
demonstration of the tea ceremony,
flower arranging, origami and some
folk dances. It was a very
enjoyable day.
Mrs. Joyce Vincent and Mrs.
Kathy Walker presented a
challenging worship service on
"Beginnings".
An invitation was received to
Blyth UCW Fall Thankoffering on
Sunday October 4 and to Gorrie
UCW Victorian Evening Bazaar on
November 27.
A donation was made to
Wingham and Area Palliative Care
Services and a motion was passed
to pay one-half the cost of
registration to the Toe-Alpha
Christmas Conference for two
young people, if any from the
church wish to attend.
The North Huron Regional rally
will be held Oct. 13 in the Belgrave
church. It was decided to buy 12
United Church Calendars for
anyone wishing them.
Mitchell UCW is holding a
special retreat day on Saturday,
Oct. 24 entitled, "A Day Apart for
All Women" at Mitchell United
Church. Mrs. Katie Southon will
be the speaker. Anyone wishing to
attend should contact Mrs. Mary
Hunter before Oct. 15.

Grey Central Public School student Kendra Wilson seems a little
smelling in the jar held by Chris TenPas at the Environment Fair in Brussels last Thursday.
Chris and her husband Ben were showing the environmental harm of most commercial soap
products. The soap in the jar had sat for a year and bore a remarkable resemblance to lard,
which is the same thing that would happen when the soap made its way through the wash
water into the ground.
Environment Fair is a success
Organizers of the first North
Huron Environment Fair, held in
Brussels last Thursday acclaim it a
success.
Chairperson Donna White said
the North Huron Environment
Group, a committee of eight
responsible for organizing the
event, were very pleased with the
attendance figures and with the
quality of the exhibits. "That’s what
really makes it a success,” said
Mrs. White. A total of 430 students
and 300 adults attended.
The group is already formulating
ideas for new year's events, little
suggestions that will improve on
this novice venture.
The Fair also marked the finale
of the button battery project, of
which 2,414 were collected. The
winner of the contest was Jean
Nethery, who received a composter
while second place winner, Mabel
Glanville, won a package of
rechargeable batteries.
