Council passes zoning by-law amendments After no one attended a public meeting Monday night to discuss proposed changes to the Brussels Zoning Bylaw, Village Council passed a bylaw incorporating the change. Most of the changes remove restrictions rather than add new ones. A new permitted use of bed and breakfast was included which will allow people to host guests in their own homes as a home busi ness, as long as the area used does not take up more than 25 per cent of the floor area of the dwelling. Clerk-Treasurer Donna White explained that many people have wanted to operate small bed and breakfast businesses but were Bunker suits burden Brussels’ fire budget Continued from page 1 money to build the hall. The next hurdle is to find money for compul sory bunker suits which all firemen must have by law by 1995. Clerk- Treasurer Donna White said she has put a $500 allocation in the pre liminary budget for 1993 to cover purchase of some suits. The suits cost more than $800 each and 14 must be purchased. Chief Bernard said he’d like to invest the money set aside and buy all the new suits at the same time. n .... Pack Your Bags! You could win a luxurious weekend away for 2. Another change makes it easier to build on comer lots by reducing the set-back requirements while a third change increases the amount of coverage allowed on core com mercial (downtown) properties to 50 per cent from 35 per cent. The one additional restriction, one that had been enforced under the building bylaw anyway, was to prohibit the used of galvanized steel as a building material for any exterior use in the village. Most of the other changes were house-keeping matters to clear up mistakes or ambiguities in the old bylaw. Regulations on the suits are chang ing and he said he would like to have all the suits exactly the same when the time came to buy them. Councillor Bruce Hahn, who sits on the fire committee, said a meet ing should be organized between town council and the department to discuss the department's needs in a new fire hall and get an estimate of just how much it would cost to put up such a structure.
