Blyth Rutabaga Festival ’92
Metro's Winged Wheels
make first appearance
One of the highlights of this year's
Rutabaga Festival Parade promises to be the
Metro Toronto Police Department's Winged
Wheels precision motorcycle team.
In 1990, Chief of Police William
McCormack authorized the formation of the
Metropolitan public relations unit. The riders
are stationed at the four Traffic Units
throughout Metropolitan Toronto.
The Winged Wheels are under the
command of Staff Inspector Gary Beamish,
and led by Lead Rider Constable Stan
Zieleniewski. The team is choreographed by
Inspector William Fordham and Staff
Sergeant Tony Smith.
The first official engagement for the
Winged Wheels was the opening ceremonies
of Molson’s Supercross at the Skydome on
May 25, 1990. Since then they have made
appearances across the province and
internationally.
The Winged Wheels are named for the
insignia worn on the sleeves of traffic
officers uniforms, the internationally
recognized symbol of a motorcycle rider.
The squadron of 25 motorcycles will
perform their precision drills, of sixteen
basic manoeuvers, on the main street of
Blyth just after the 11:00 am parade on
Saturday, June 27.
Strange sights
There were strange sights on the main street of Blyth during the
parade as the Mocha Temple Band added an oriental touch to the
festivities honouring Huron County rutabagas.
On parade
The Mocha Temple Desert Rats tore
up the parade route with their
interesting display.
There are many ways to serve up rutabaga
and inventive cooks are invited to enter the
third annual Rutabaga cooking Contest, as
part of Blyth's Rutabaga Festival
celebrations on Saturday, June 26.
Last year nearly 50 entries were judged by
eight judges and prizes were awarded in four
categories. The winning entries were sold at
the Saturday night dinner for everyone to try
a sample.
Awards this year will be given to winners
of the Cake Division, Muffin or Loaf
Division, Pie Division, and Most Creative

Blyth businessman George Hubbard is
once again supplying free rutabagas for the
entrants. In past years close to one ton of
rutabagas were supplied for use by the
Rutabaga Festival cooks.
