The Citizen, 1992-06-24, Page 9THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24,1992. PAGE 9. New look, new rooms at Brussels Country Inn We've always known Brussels is a nice place io live, and a nice place to visit. But, for many years if you wanted to enjoy an extended visit, it was difficult as accommo dations were minimal. Now, there's room at the inn. Helga Zimmer and Joe Springer, of Waterloo officially opened the newly renovated Brussels Country Inn early this month. The couple took over the former Brussels Hotel in February and plans began almost immediately to transform the busi ness into a luxurious, yet comfort able establishment. Innkeepers New owners of the Brussels Country Inn are Joe Springer and Helga Zimmer, formerly of Waterloo. It had been some time since the upstairs rooms had been utilized for anything other than living quarters for the owners. With virtually no other places for overnight guests to stay, the demand was there. Joe, with the help of local contractor* John Engel, whose wife Pat is one of the inn's two full-time employ ees, literally started from scratch, completely stripping the second floor. Walls were added, walls were knocked down, rooms enlarged and washrooms installed. "Everything was new, even the baseboards," said Joe. "We filled five dumpsters when we tore it apart." The deadline for completion of the ambitious project was set for the end of June, but this was stepped up when a reservation came in for a wedding in May. The bedspreads were ordered from Montreal and actually delivered by car the night before. "But, we got it together," said Helga, smiling. In three months what was once 17 rooms and one washroom, was transformed into three rooms and three suites, each with its own washroom. They are decorated in tasteful elegance with pine furni ture and floral bedspreads and individual design personality. Prices are very reasonable, with a regular suite renting for $55, the larger for $65 and the rooms, $42. Remodeling was not restricted to the upstairs, however, though it was a little less intensive in other areas of the inn. Most of the work downstairs has been cosmetic, reflecting Helga and Joe's style. There is still work to be done on the outside and a little left down stairs, but for the most part, the Country Inn has taken the shape that Helga and Joe were aiming for. "We want a business that everyone is comfortable coming to," said Helga. The inn is open for business Tuesdays to Sundays, Mondays if demand warrants, from 11 a.m. The tavern closes at 9 p.m. on Sunday and 1 a.m. every other day. The lounge features live entertainment on weekends. There are two dining rooms which can be booked for pri vate parties or for a daily meal. Joe and Helga have changed the menu so Chef Dale Schneider now uses his culinary skills to turn out Euro pean and German cuisine rather than typical fast food fare. There is a buffet on Fridays at lunch and on Sunday from 4:30 to 7:30. The salad bar offers a wide variety of dishes to appeal, says Helga to everybody's taste. Joe and Helga have zealously promoted the changes at the inn, distributing letters to bus tours and through advertising. "For the upcoming FunFest weekend in Brussels, July 3, 4 and 5, the Brus sels Country Inn will be featuring special matinee performances by Yaeger, a contemporary group that plays a diverse selection of music, Helga said. Their recent grand opening open house was well-attended with about 60 local businesspeople on hand June 5 and 75 area residents taking a peek at the changes the following day. The response, they feel to date has been good, but Helga says, you always wish for more. She would like to see more of the rooms rent ed during the week and hopes that the new signs they intend to place outside will help to let people know what the inn has to offer. Top drawer The accommodations at Brussels Country Inn are not just comfortable, but spacious and tastefully decorated as well. Guests have a choice of three suites or three regular rooms. Huron marks Health & Safety Week Huron County Health Unit will be honouring its employees for their safe and healthy work habits during Health and Safety Week June 21-27. “We're pleased that Huron County Health Unit joined its fellow health care providers across the province in taking the opportunity to focus on staff well being,” says Dr. Herbert Buchwald, General Manager of the Health Care Occupational Health and Safety Association. (HCOHSA provides health and safety consultation, training and information to the province's 1,400 health care employers. As one of Ontario's safety associations, HCOHSA is funded by the provincial Workplace Health and Safety Agency from assessments health care providers pay to the Worker's Compensation Board.) “Many people are surprised to find out that care-givers face hazards on the job,” he explains. “Infectious diseases, heavy lifting, chemicals, gases, sharp instruments and hot or slippery surfaces are just a few of the potential risks. However, many of these risks can be reduced or eliminated with comprehensive, year-round health and safety programs. “Health and Safety Week offers a chance for all employers to feature those programs,” he adds. \____I____ | 950 ML REG OR UGHT VILLAGE f SALAD DRESSING r 1.99 ri WEAK RED 4 WHfTE CANADIAN COLOURS TO BREAK A BALLOON FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A PRIZE!
