The Citizen, 1992-06-03, Page 22PAGE 22. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3,1992. Letters THE EDITOR, I would like to respond to the letter written to the editor by D. Trollope in the May 27 issue of The Citizen. After having read The Citizen from cover to cover as I usually do, I could not put the above letter out of my mind. The writer of the article appears to feel a large degree of animosity toward all religious theology and belief. I would like to challenge his assumption that all Christians are either extremely stupid or lacking totally in any positive self-image. The writer goes on to say that religious leaders of all time are “snake-oil salesmen” and this statement I found to be extremely incorrect as most of the clergy I have met are the kindest most helpful human beings that ever graced this planet! (with some exceptions not doubt). D. Trollop informs us that he/she is a “Secular Humanist”. For those of us lacking in the ability to define such terminology this refers to a person with a “worldly philosophy” on life, one who places all his or her trust in their own personhood to accomplish any given task in life. I do not judge D. Trollop for his/her perspective on life and I agree that we need to have belief in ourselves as worthwhile indivi duals, yet I have to question why he/she appears to carry such resentment towards those of us that choose to exercise our belief in Christianity. If he/she is happy with his/her choice as a Secular Humanist why must he pick apart Christianity with such vehemence? As you realize by now I consider myself to be a Christian. I will be quick to add that I am not without fault nor am I without question about facets of my religion at times. Yet I have a firm conviction at all times that tells me God is the Supreme Power of the Universe. No scientific explanation or human rationale could ever change that for me. In conclusion I agree with D. Trollope when he/she suggested that Christianity can promote a negative self-image but that occurs only when the message is not understood properly or is twisted out of context. I see the Bible as a positive and loving work of inspiration and encouragement. Jesus asks his followers to “Love their neighbours as themselves.” He also says that God loves us unconditionally! The Bible has been an inspiration to such great individuals as Abraham Lincoln, Norman Vincent Peale, Michelangelo, Emily Bronte, Helen Keller, St. Teresa, John Milton, and countless more. It will also remain my greatest inspiration in life. Liz Stryker Brussels. THE EDITOR, Seventy-five years ago, Chicago businessman Melvin Jones founded what is today the world's largest humanitarian service organization - The International Association of Lions' Clubs. Jones' idea was to utilize the resources of business men and other professionals to benefit communities and people in need. Today, his vision lives on through 1.4 million members throughout the world. The mission of Lions Clubs was altered forever by Helen Keller, who, in a moving speech at their 1925 International Convention, challenged the group to adopt the cause of the visually handicapped by becoming “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” The challenge was accepted and, since then, Lions have become leaders in the fight against visual impairments. This role took on its greatest significance in 1990 when Lions launched SightFirst, a $130 million (US) initiative to rid the world of preventable and reversible blindness. In addition to its global programs, each Lions Club works at grass roots level to identify local needs and improve the quality of PRO Reg. $259. Ronald Nesbitt, President Londesboro & District Lions Club THE EDITOR, In reading our local paper I set we are in trouble at the Memorial Hall again with hydro costing $2300 to $2400 a month to heat and light the lower hall and the brunt of the blame is on the card players who use just the downstairs hall two evenings a week. We would like our clerk to know that we have never turned the heat up and in fact have played a couple of nights with our coats on to keep warm. Our understanding is that the thermostat is controlled from the main office which someone else controls. CROSS CANADA MARKETPLACE IT'S FAST - IT'S EASY! ONE CALL, ONE BILL DOES IT ALL. I wonder how much area does the lower hall take in, just the one room the whole auditorium and the link. If you do not want the local people to use the hall just say so, as I believe we are gradually being crowded out anyway, our last card party and Seniors meeting were crowded out with chairs, tables and heaps of books. And speaking of chairs, the good chairs were put away so what we were to use was all covered with paint, tar or broken with slivers everywhere. To the taxpayers we wish to apologize for putting your taxes so high. A Card Player John Hesselwood. THE EDITOR, More than a few improper phone calls have been placed to our residence that we do NOT appreciate. Our answering machine caught the last one who left a number and an “abusive” message to a named six-year-old. This was an intentional call - not a lucky dial. Other times, kinds call and play their radios or flush a toilet and swear on and on. Parents - Where are you? This has happened at all hours of the day and night. The last one was 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27. We returned the call to the number left but apparently the child in that house didn't do it. That only means their number is apparently misused. Who is going to stop these kids? Parents don't care! Teachers' jobs don't list teaching a child how to use a phone. Bell Canada can't trace a call without a request for police. Our police can't trace something that has no proof. Parents - wake up. Spend a few minutes from your busy day and teach your children about telephones. After that call, I can't feel good about letting small children play outside alone, let alone go to and from school. The summer will get here soon. Please keep your kids off the phone unnecessarily. Any further calls to us will be handled by the police. The fines are pretty hefty. Debbie Seili.
