WaltonThe news from | Compiled by Betty McCall Phone 887-6677 Win is sweet for Walton girl The winner of this week's draw at the Walton Country Store was Jacqui Poirier of Walton. The prize was a large box of chocolates and the winning ticket was picked from 108 entries. Robert Meier drew the winning ticket and the witness was Carmen Klaus. It has been reported that in the near future we are to have a pay telephone in front of our Walton Country Store. Duffs U.C.W. garage sale and bake sale of held Saturday, May 30 at the Walton Hall turned out to be a good success with lots of baking on hand along with several miscellaneous items. A cup of coffee was also available. Another huge garage sale will beheld in Walton and surrounding area with 20 families participating this Saturday, June 6. The Walton Women's Institute May meeting was held at the home of Leona McDonald with 11 ladies present. President Ruth Axtmann welcomed everyone and conducted the business part of the meeting, opening with the Institute Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and O Canada. Minutes were approved as read by Marjory Humphries followed by financial reports and correspondence was dealt with. The District Annual report held May 12 at Gorrie United Church was given by Margaret Mclnroy. Hallrice 4H judges cows The Hallrice Dairy Calf Club met at the home of Art Bos and family on Wednesday, May 14 at 8 p.m. Classifier Don Aylsworth started the meeting by showing the group how the classification of a cow is done. He gave each member a Type Classification Report as a guideline and went over every section, pointing out what to look for in a cow. Using what they learned, members proceeded to judge four cows and give reasons for their choices. The next meeting will be held on June 10 at 8 p.m. at the home of Fred Armstrong of RR 2, Auburn. Several are planning to attend the Huron East District W.I. to celebrate 90 years at the Howick Central School Auditorium Sunday, June 7 from 2 - 4 p.m. The theme is “Honour our past - Salute the Present - Welcome the Future”. The new Institute signs were mentioned that were put up at the three entrances in Walton. The Institute meeting in June is on Cultural Affairs. Mary Humphries will convene the evening. Each member please bring a guest or two. Leona took over the rest of the meeting on Family and Consumer Affairs. Members told of a cooking disaster for the roll call. Then a video presentation “Shopping for Nutrition” was shown. It illustrated how to make nutrition choices at the supermarket. It gave tips on pre-shopping, planning your preparation of meals for a week at home. There were guidelines for healthy eating and how to make appropriate choices according to the Canada Food Guide for healthy eating. Leona gave a few interesting and useful tidbits to close this part.
