The Citizen, 1992-02-26, Page 11THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26,1992. PAGE 11. Rare cars get makeover at Brussels shop Two very rare and exotic cars have taken up residence at McNeil's Auto Body of Brussels these days. McNeil's, who restore antique vehicles as a sideline to their regu lar autobody business, have in their possession two DeTomaso automo biles. The Italian manufactured 1973 Pantara and the 1970 Mangusta, both have 351 Cleveland engines, manufactured by Ford and shipped to Italy for installation. The mid-engine location height ens the areo-dynamics of the vehi cles, with the speedometer registering upwards of 200 miles per hour. Both cars were purchased in the United States; the ownership and license for both vehicles are still being registered in that coun try. Don McNeil believes there are perhaps "likely less than 15 Man- gusta's in North America." The Italian sports cars had sat outside exposed to the elements of the weather, and had been poorly maintained for the past couple of years. The Pantara had to be com pletely stripped down and built back up. Fully restored, the Pantara has an approximate value of $50,000, the Mangusta approximately $80,000. The owner of both automobiles, Paul Herriott, wanted the cars restored both for show and to drive. He had previously seen another automobile that McNeil's Auto Body had restored, prompting him to contact Don McNeil. Paul Herriott is a retired televi sion and commercial producer. He now divides his time between his homes in Toronto and the Bahamas. Larry Cardiff joins The Citizen Impressive bodies These two rare automobiles were recently at McNeil's Auto Body in Brussels for restoration work. The cars are both DeTomaso automobiles. The one on the left is a 1973 Pantara, while the other is a 1970 Mangusta. The owner is a retired television and commercial producer, who had previously seen Don McNeil's work, which prompted him to call him when he was looking to have the cars restored. The combined value of the cars is approximately $130,000.
