Bulls open playoffs with win over Sailors The Brussels Bulls look like they will make short work of the Goderich Sailors in the opening round of the Western Junior C playoffs. The Bulls took game one in the best-of-five, first round series 9-2 on Friday night. There was only one bright spot in the game for the Sailors, who won only one game all year. That was a 1-0 lead in the first period. With Joe Walker and Steve Fritz in the penalty box, Chris Reeves de flected a point shot past Bulls net- S ports minder Jeff Roy for the early lead. But after that, it was all Bulls. Four goals in a two-minute span basi-cally salted away the victory. It was 4-1 after one, and 7-1 after two. Sam Kulfofski, Corey McKee and Steve Fritz had two each. Greg McNevan, Jamie Hislop, and Jeff McKee added singles. Jason McNi- chol played a strong game picking up three assists. Bob Lumley was blasted with 46 shots in the Goderich net while the Sailors could only muster 11 on Roy. Coach Scott Pettigrew said, “We were four for 10 on our powerplay and showed lot better puck control. In the playoffs special teams can often make the different so I'm hoping we can keep that part of our game strong.” Game two was supposed to be played Sunday afternoon but poor weather condition forced the Sailors to cancel. It's not clear when or if that game will be rescheduled. The Bulls and Sailors locked horns last night (Tues.) in Goderich. From the Bullspen: Grand Valley and Wingham split the first two games of their series as did Walker ton and Mt. Forest. This round must be over by Sunday. < « « Blyth Bantams win, tie to wrap up season BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Bantams gained three of a possible four points last week as they tied Wingham 1-1 in an exhibition match at home on Feb. 3, then trounced Milverton 10-6 on the road on February 7 in their final regular season game. Against Wingham neither team could capitalize on the numerous scoring opportunities due to some stellar netminding. Christopher Howson, playing his first game in a month, scored a breakaway goal after a good pass from Jerrod But ton to open the game scoring 24 seconds into the second period. There was no more scoring until Wingham tied the game with just under four minutes remaining in the game as the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Blyth took a skeleton crew to Milverton last Friday night where they watched Milverton build a 4-1 first period lead before coming to life and whipping the home team 10-6. Every skater garnered at least one point while Chris Lee came up with some big third period saves to Blyth Atoms sweep opening playoff Blyth Atoms completed their sweep of their first round playoff series with Wallace Township by winning two games last week. The first two goals were assisted by Darryl Bromley and the final goal by Chris Carter. Wallace scored its second goal with 4:15 left in the game. Wallace fought back to make the final game of the series, played in Blyth Thursday, a close one. Again, Wallace took the lead with a goal at the 11:53 mark of the second. Four minutes later, Blyth tied the game on a goal by Mike Haggitt, assisted by Mike Courtney and Trevor Wilson. Before the peri od ended Mike Courtney scored from Darryl Bromley to put Blyth ahead. But Wallace tied the score early in the third and the teams played even for most of the period. With just 46 seconds left on the clock, Jeff Cowan scored an unassisted goal to lock up the win and the FINAL WESTERN JUNIOR C STANDINGS TEAM GP W L T PTS GF GA Hanover 30 25 2 3 53 202 71 Brussels 30 19 4 7 45 168 95 Gr.
