Saturday night the Western
Junior C Allstars took on the Strat
ford Cullitons of the Midwestern

close to 1,000 at the Walkerton
arena. While the Allstars looked
good for the first 40 minutes, in the
end the Cullitons won 10-4.
Stratford started quick firing five
goals past Allstar goalie Trevor
Fortune of the Brussels Bulls in the
first period. But the stars of the

Blyth Bantams lose 3
in Silver Stick tournee
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Bantams participated
in the Kincardine Silver Stick
Tournament over the holidays.
With their two top scorers missing
in action the team had a tough time
getting the offence in gear as they
lost all three games in their round
robin grouping.
Blyth opened against Tiverton on
December 27 and Tiverton built a
4-0 lead before adding an empty
netter on their way to a 5-2 win.
Blyth scored two goals late in the
second period to get back into the
game but couldn't get any closer.
Ryan Chamney scored a power
play goal as he swatted the puck
out of the air with assists to Tim
Cowan arid Pee Wee call-up Chris
Stewart. One minute later, Chris
topher Howson deposited the
rebound of Jerrod Button's shot to
cut the lead to 4-2 but that was as
close as they could come.
Blyth lost game two to Norman-
by on December 28 by a 3-1 score,
losing the game in the final minute.
After Normanby scored for a 1-0
second period lead, Blyth tied the
game with five minutes left in the
game. Michael de Jong set up
Henry Bos at the blueline. Bos's
shot went wide but Tim Lyons
picked up the rebound off the end
boards and snapped a low shot past
the goalie. The game looked like it
was headed for a tie but Normanby
had other plans as they notched the
winner with 42 seconds remaining,
then added an empty net goal with
seven seconds left in the game.
Blyth completed the tourney on
December 29, this time losing 5-3
to Zurich. Zurich built a 3-0 lead
before Blyth scored the only two
second period goals to cut the lead
to 3-2.
Michael de Jong skated up the
boards after a pass from Ryan
Chamney and beat the goalie with a
slap shot from just inside the blue-
line. Peter Craig then scored a
short-handed goal with one second
remaining as he finished off a
brilliant end to end rush.
The teams traded early third
period goals as Chris Stewart
whipped a shot from the slot tor
Blyth's goal after a set up from Tim
Lyons. Zurich added a late goal to
eliminate Blyth from further tour
nament play with a 5-3 win.
One bright spot for Blyth was the
Tournament shoot-out competition.
Goaltender Chris Lee made it to the
semi-finals while Peter Craig won
the “C” Division shoot-out compe
tition in convincing fashion. Pee
Wee call-ups Chris Stewart, Fred
Datema and Michael Salverda also
when Todd Norman of Brussels
stole the puck and slid it to a wide
open Greg McNevan and the Bulls
winger made no mistake putting it
upstairs over Cullitons goalie Mike
Edwards.
In the second period the Allstars
carried the play and actually
outscored Stratford 3-1. Hanover's
Jeremy Franks snapped home the
Allstars second goal on the power
play on a pass from Norman. Then
Norman scored the nicest goal of
the night deking out several Culli-
played well throughout the tourney
for the Bantams.
Blyth also hosted two exhibition
games over the Christmas break,
losing 4-2 to Howick on December
23 and beating Clinton II on
December 30, 7-2.
Against Howick Michael Brom
ley scored both Blyth goals, with
his first assisted by Jonathan
Collins and Ryan Chamney, to give
Blyth a 2-1 second period lead.
Howick stormed out in the third
period and tied the game with a
power play goal, scored the winner
with one and a half minutes left in
the game, then added a short-hand
ed empty-netter in the dying sec
onds for a come from behind 4-2
victory.
Blyth rebounded on December
30 as they used a passing game to
defeat Clinton II, 7-2.
Tim Lyons and Michael Bromley
led the way with two goals each,
with Bromley also adding two
assists. Peter Craig, Benjie Hakkers
and Jerrod Button rounded out the
scoring with Craig adding three
assists and Hakkers adding two
assists. Single assists went to Jerrod
Button, Ryan Chamney, Jonathan
Collins and Wilfred Datema.
This concludes the holiday
schedule with playoffs only three
weeks away.

defenceman Jay Shewfelt scored
the other goal for the Allstars.
In the third period it was all
Stratford. The Cullitons cranked it
up and put four more goals past
Allstars' goalie John Nevilles of
Grand Valley. Jason Mervyn, who
leads the Midwestern Junior B
league scoring, had four goals and
an assist to pace Stratford.

defeat
Milverton
On Friday, Dec. 27 the Crusaders
played host to the Milverton 4-
Wheel Drives in a rare Friday home
game.
Brussels opened the scoring four
minutes into he game when Dean
Nicholson and Tim Fritz drew
assists on a Kevin McArter goal.
Two and a half minutes later the
Crusaders took a two-goal lead
when Fritz set up Brian Campbell
for the score.
The Drives kept coming at the
Brussels boys and cut the lead to
one when Ron Bowman scored
unassisted. Milverton tied the game
up three minutes later when Roger
Carter and Jason Coulter drew
assists on a Kevin Talsma goal and
the first period ended tied at two
goals each.
The only goal of the second came
six and a half minutes into the
period when Campbell and Fritz set
up McArter for his second goal of
the game, giving Brussels a 3-2
lead after two periods of play.
The Crusaders took a two-goal
lead just over three minutes into the
third when Ron Pryce scored unas
sisted after winning a face off in
the Milverton zone. The Drives cut
the lead by one with just over seven
minutes left on the clock when
Bowman and Coulter set up Dan
Gerber for the goal. Brussels added
an empty net goal by J. C. Hewitt
with one second left on the lock for
a 5-3 Crusader's victory.
Sunday night, Dec. 29 saw the
Crusaders on the ice at home again

Meanwhile the Bulls dropped to
second place in the Western Junior
C standings as Hanover picked up
three wins. The Barons lead by five
points with each team having seven
games left in the regular season.
Brussels will be back in action
this weekend with two home
games. Saturday night the Bulls
host Orangeville in a game
rescheduled from December. Game
time is 8:30. On Sunday the Mt.
Forest Patriots visit Brussels for a
2:00 game. The Bulls have yet to
beat the Patriots this season in two
tries.
On the last weekend in December
the Bulls had moved back into top
spot in the Western Junior C
League. Two wins over the week
end, including a very impressive 4-
1 decision over Hanover, gave the
Bulls a one point edge.
On Friday night, Dec. 27, in
Wingham the Bulls jumped out to
an early lead and never looked back
winning 7-4. Goals by Greg
McNevan, a shorthanded break
away goal by Corey McKee and
Dan Burton's marker gave the Bulls
a 3-0 first period lead. Jason Baier
made it a four goal bulge with
another shorthanded marker in the
second, then McNevan fired home
his second of the game to make it
5-0. Ted Sills and McKee's second
of the game rounded out the scor
ing.
Dec. 29 in Brussels was the battle
for top spot and the Bulls were
ready. Solid forechecking and good
goaltending from Jeff Roy helped
the Bulls to a 4-1 win and top spot
Bill Speilmacher opened the scor
ing with the Barons only goal of
the afternoon on the power play.
But the Bulls came right back scor
ing two goals in the last two min
utes of the first. Jason Baier and
Jamie Hislop finding the back of
the net.

Coach Scott Pettigrew said, “It
was an important win for us
because it gives our confidence a

then we have shown all year.”
“I'm not too concerned about first

we use the last seven games to get
ready for the playoffs. We had a
few problems early in December
but we have those worked out and
Sunday's effort proved that,” said
Coach Pettigrew.
