Crusaders split weekend action
On Friday, Nov. 15 the Crusaders
travelled to Durham to face the
Thundercats.
Durham opened the scoring with
three goals before the period was
half over. The Crusaders cut the
lead by one when Kevin McArter
and Ron Strome set up Nigel Tay
lor for the goal. Brussels cut the
lead to one when McArter scored
the goal with Rick Boon drawing
the assist.
Durham scored the next goal but
Brussels answered it back when
Brian Ten Pas drew the only assist
on a J. C. Hewitt goal. Durham
added one more to take a 5-3 lead
after one period.
The Thundercats added three
goals to their lead before the sec
ond period was six minutes old.
The Crusaders cut the lead when
Ron Strome and Tim Fritz com
bined to set up McArter for his sec
ond of the game. Strome then
combined with Dean Wheeler to set
up Fritz for a goal. Durham scored
the next goal, before Fritz and
McArter set up Ten Pas for a goal.
The second period ended with
Durham adding three more for a
12-6 lead after two periods of play.
Durham scored the first goal of
the third before Boon set up Hewitt
for his second of the game for the
Crusaders. Brussels added one
more goal when Brian Campbell
and Ten Pas set up Fritz for his sec
ond of the game. Durham however
added two more goals of their own
to make the final score 15-8 in their
favour.
Sunday night, Nov. 17 saw the
Blyth team
wins, loses
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Bantams split a pair of
games last week as they shaded
Goderich II 4-3 at home on
November 18 before losing 8-6 to
Elma Logan on November 22 in
Monkton.
Against Goderich II the teams
traded goals in the first two periods
before Blyth notched the winner
late in the third for the victory.
Jerrod Button opened the scoring
in the first with a breakaway goal
with assists to Ryan Chamney and
Christopher Howson. Goderich
then scored three straight goals to
take a 3-1 lead before Blyth tied the
game with two late second period
goals.
Benjie Hakkers cashed in a
rebound for Blylh's second goal
with assists to Tim Cowan and
Michael Bromley before Bromley
tied the game with a power play
slapper from the blueline, assisted
by Wilfred Datema. Michael Brom
ley added the winner late in the
third as he swept around the
Goderich net and put a wrist shot
into the top comer.
It was a wide open game against
Elma-Logan on Friday night as the
goaltenders put on a show that,
hopefully, will be unequalled in the
future. It was a case of last shot
wins as Blyth lost an uninspired
spectacle 8-6.
Brian McNichol and Ryan
Chamney each scored two goals
with Chamney also picking up an
assist. Christopher Howson and
Henry Bos rounded out the scoring
as Bos also recorded an assist. Tim
Lyons added two assists while sin
gle assists went to Peter Craig,
Benjie Hakkers and Jonathan
Collins.
Although Blyth scored two
power goals in the game, they
allowed Elma-Logan to score two
short-handed goals to mollify any
Blyth advantage. A more consistent
effort will be necessary if the team
is to expect better results in future
games.
Crusaders play host to the Kincar
dine Kings. The Kings took an
early 1-0 lead on the Crusaders.
Brussels tied the score up with just
over five minutes left in the period
when Brian Campbell set up Kevin
McArter for the goal. The first peri
od ended up 1 -1.
Brussels took the lead seven
minutes into the second when
McArter and Tim Fritz drew assists
on a Rick Boon goal. They
increased lead a minute later when
Boon and McArter set up Fritz for
the goal. The Kings came back
with two straight goals to tie the
score once again. Brussels regained
the lead when McArter scored an
unassisted goal. They then made it
a two goal lead when J.C. Hewitt
finished off a play set up by Dean
Wheeler and Brett Gamiss. Brus
sels took a 6-3 lead when Fritz and
Campbell drew assists on
McArter's third goal of the game.
The Crusaders took a 7-3 lead
when Brian Ten Pas and Jim
Topham set up Wheeler for the
score and that's the way the second
period ended.
Kincardine scored the first goal
of the third to cut into the lead.
Brussels answered back just over
two minutes later when Ten Pas
and Hewitt drew assists on Boon's
second of the game. They added
another to their lead when Fritz and
Campbell drew assists on
McArter's fourth goal of the game.
Brussels finished off the scoring
with Campbell and McArter draw
ing assists on Fritz' second goal of
the game to make the final 10-4
score for Brussels.
