The Scouts have also been asked to keep the Legion steps cleared of snow over the winter. October 26 was Boy Scout Apple Day. A total of 13 Cubs and Scouts and one Beaver canvassed Blyth, Aubum and Londesboro to collect a total of $373.90. The meeting will be open to interested parents, all section leaders, Scouts and Ventur ers. Blyth village councillors expressed satisfaction, at their Nov. 13 meeting, with the results of their experimental dust control pro gram in the village this summer. The program used lignin, a by product of the manufacture of paper from wood pulp, to keep the dust down. Town works foreman John Rinn said he was happy with the results. The alleyways were graded last week for the first time since the lignin had been applied in the spring, he said. Normally they would be graded three times during the summer. The lignin is sup posed to bind the surface so tightly that after a few years it is like pave ment. This year the gravel in the alleyways really packed well, he said. Councillor Steven Sparling said his company had used the same dust control system and found no problems where trucks were travel ling in a straight line but where there was a lot of turning, there was some problem. In another year he would try using more applications with less of the chemical in each application to see if it would pack harder. "It's really the only alterna tive that is a 'green' product", he said. Reeve Albert Wasson said he hopes the new material will eventu ally do away with a lot of mainte nance on the gravelled roadways. After three years, he noted, the gravel is supposed to be so hard only patching will be needed. "It e will probably come very close to blacktop," he said. "You can buy a lot of this for what it would cost to tar and chip or pave."
