The Citizen, 1991-09-18, Page 6PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1991. Letter to the editor Brussels developer raps council members THE EDITOR, This letter is written in regard to Brussels Council Briefs in the Citi zen dated Wed., Sept. 11. Firstly, I am appalled by coun cil's decision - especially that of Councillor Bruce Hahn and Reeve Gordon Workman - at agreeing not to hold a public meeting before the election this fall. According to Councillor Bruce Hahn's response printed in the paper, “the only thing they're going to do is hang you for what you've done in the past three years. If you wait until after the election then you can talk about what you might do (in the next three years)”. It is clear from this response that Hahn and perhaps other members of council are avoiding any form of public confrontation that would taint their chance of re-election this fall. Also as quoted in the paper, Reeve Gordon Workman com plained that “there's nobody there” in reference to the public meeting. Come on Brussels, let's get behind this!! We can't allow coun cil to hide issues at hand until after an election. Only by means of an all candidates' meeting after a nom ination deadline date can we, the Letter to the editor Continued from page 4 people aware of the services avail able, but also to give everyone an opportunity to voice their concerns, either pro or con, with respect to such services. Since the men in our community may find it the most difficult to voice their feelings with respect to the effects of cancer, we are hoping to see a good number of men come out. Whether or not you or your fami ly has been affected by cancer, I hope you will come out and bring a friend. Mary Lou Aubin Goderich, Ontario. electorate, decide on the policies and people who will represent us for the next three years. On Thurs day, September 12, I asked Coun cillor Bruce Hahn what his purpose on council was. He replied, “to keep developers like you out of town.” Secondly, with regard to the seg ment written on council's frustra tion over the renovation of the old Export Packers building; I (present owner) would like to clarify some remarks made by council. Council remarked that no plans were ever produced as promised. This is sim ply not true. Scale plans were sub mitted in early August to the town clerk. As for a temporary permit being requested by the developer, I have never heard tell of a Tempo rary permit for a building in my past 35 years of contracting experi ence. I have, however had difficulty in finding out why I have not received a permit as applied for. In the latter part of August, the building inspec tor (Paul Josling) informed me that he would issue a building permit for the construction of storefronts. This permit was to be issued on Sept. 1 or delivered to the Clerk's office. That was never done. Since your issue of the paper, I have had difficulty in obtaining information from the Clerk's office, Reeve Workman, and Councillor Hahn. By that time, I could smell a fish in the pot. Therefore on Thurs day, September 12, I went to the building inspector's residence in Blyth. He informed me that he could not issue a permit for any part of the building until after Tues day, September 17. Issuance was delayed because council was going to see lawyers in London as t^ whether or not an Engineer's report from B. M. Ross and Associates Ltd. dated May 26, 1978 could be used to stop progress on this build ing. The report states: “In my opin ion the building is totally unsafe, could not be economically repaired, and should be tom down immedi ately.” And yet since this report was issued, council and two other parties have owned this building. I was never informed that this letter existed until September 13. It is not registered on title and was never presented with the tax certifi cate. Therefore, I strongly recommend an all candidates' meeting be held in order to elect a council that knows what's going on, promotes business, and gets the town rolling again. P.S. After almost 14 years, this Engineer's report has come out of the closet. Kenneth J.
