The Citizen, 1991-09-04, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4,1991. From the Minister's Study God held nothing back ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA ft ‘>•7 I |M !Z* J BY PASTOR BOB BARNHART BLYTH CHURCH OF GOD One of the most well known verses in the Bible is John 3:16. Yet we forget what a powerful verse it is because we are so famil iar with it. Listen to these words as if you are hearing them for the first time: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” God sent his son to die on a cross. When we look at the cross we can get a glimpse at God's heart of love for us. The cross was the only way that he could show us his love for us. He took all the sin of the world upon himself through Christ. That is the sin of every per son who has or ever will live and banished it for all time. Look and see the Christ bleeding and dying on that cruel cross and then entering into the very depths of hell to offer us the free gift of salvation. When we allow Christ to enter into us the first instinct of the renewed heart is love. Nothing could influence our lives as much as the love of God. Christ didn't die to make God love us but rather because God has always loved man with an eternal love from the very beginning of time and creation. That is important and is so wonderful. God doesn't tell us to clean up our act and then say “I love you”. God loved us before. Romans 5, verse 8 says “But God demonstrated his own love for us in this while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” We don't earn God's love. Along this same line, think about this: if God so loved before how much more will he want to do for us if we accept Christ. This is what the author is saying three verses later in Romans five, 11 it says.” For if when we were God's enemies we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life.” God held nothing back. God sent the best when he sent his son. When we accept Christ as saviour God is not going to hold back until we prove ourselves he is going to freely give us of his glorious riches. It is amazing when you really stop to think about it. Lastly when we love God and are filled with his love we are channels of love to others. We cannot really love God if we don't love others around us. We should show our love by being concerned about peo ple's physical welfare and their spiritual welfare. We may never love as much as God does but we can work at its. We can help a hurt ing world. The best evangelism tool is to love another. Jesus said in John 13, 35. “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” If we remember God's love we can then seek to love others. Rev. E. Assisted by the Sarnia-Lambton United Way the committee’s goals are to establish a board of directors, apply for a registered charitable number, ensure a smooth transition from project to operational and to promote the formation of a Huron County United Way. Some of the processes involved will be setting allocation guidelines for possible member agencies and forming a campaign committee to canvass all areas of the county. A short canvassing campaign of about four weeks will be encouraged to help committee members gain experience in running campaigns of that nature. United Way representative Glen Sauve said the campaign would cover some of the operating costs for the year if the committee should choose to hire staff. Some of the United Ways in other areas are operated strictly by volunteers. There are 122 United Way offices throughout Canada, present ly. Last year, these managed to raise $210 million to support 3,600 social service agencies. Mr. Sauve said that the outlook looks very promising for a United Way branch in Huron County. The Sarnia-Lambton United Way is interested in helping to get one started in Huron, he said, and have applied for a grant for the project which will be completed in early October. Mr. Sauve, said a study of the area has shown there is a definite need for United Way funding in Huron County in addition to having the necessary support to run a cam paign.
