35th anniversary
The Walton Community Hall
was decorated with the Institute
colours of blue and gold when the
Walton Women's Institute
celebrated its 35th anniversary on
Wednesday evening, August 21.
Margaret Mclnroy, president,
welcomed the large crowd of
friends and members of other
branches in Huron ā East District.
She also introduced Barb Pinkley,
board member, and Leone Foerter,
first vice president of the District
who later brought greetings.
Margaret read a reading "Changing
It" by Bob Shrier.
Margery Huether played a
selection of music as the guests
were arriving and was pianist for
the Opening Ode. The Mary
Stewart Collect was repeated in
unison and O Canada was sung. A
motion was made to elect Helen
Craig to be secretary in the absence
of secretary treasurer Marjory
Humphries and assistant Berva
Watson. Helen read minutes of last
meeting and several items of
business were dealt with from the
correspondence. Congratulation
letters were received from several
of the Institute Branches present.
Margaret Mclnroy introduced the
Walton Institute members present
and the chartered members Leona
McDonald, Marine Marks, Mary
Humphries, and Alberta Givens
were presented with a corsage by
Barb Pinkley on behalf of the
Institute for their 35 years. They
later cut the cake that was made by
Betty McCall and decorated by
Marion Godkin.
Leanne McDonald entertained
the large audience with her famous
step-dancing and clogging.
Margaret thanked her and presented
a gift. Margery Huether gave a
reading "Bees and Human Beings."
Ruth Harding of Fordwich was
introduced by Leona McDonald.
Ruth gave a detailed report of their
trip to Victoria, B.C. where they
both had attended the F.W.I.C.
convention at the University in
July. Margery presented her with a
gift.
Margaret Mclnroy made the
draw for a door prize of a wicker
basket; that was won by Mrs.
Thornton of Gorrie, other draw
winners were Doris McCall, B. J.
DeJong and Ruth Harding. Happy
Anniversary was sung before the
chartered members cut the cake.
The next meeting has been
changed to Sept. 10, a week earlier,
when an exchange student from
Australia will be the guest speaker.
Everyone is welcome. It's an open
meeting. Ruth Axtmann and Helen
Craig offered to arrange the display
for the Brussels Fall Fair in
September.
Margaret Mclnroy sang a solo,
"We have this moment to-day,"
accompanied at the piano by
Margery Humphries, bringing a
lovely evening to a close.
Institute Grace was sung prior to
the ladies retiring to the basement
where tables were set up decorated
with the Institute colours, and blue
and gold serviettes along with the
yellow mums for table centres. A
delicious lunch of sandwiches with
