Phone 887-6677 Large crowd attends 33rd McCall picnic On Sunday, August 19 the 33rd McCall annual picnic was held at the Walton Community Hall. A large crowd of relatives attended from Blyth, Brussels, Campbellville, Clinton, Ethel, Glencoe, London, Monkton, Paris, Point Clark, Mitchell, Teeswater, Seaforth, Mis­ sissauga, Victoria B.C. and Walton. The day began with a smorgasbord meal shortly after 12:30 p.m. with Sherri and Murray McCall in charge of setting up for the day. Grace was said by Torrey McCall who had just arrived from Victoria, B.C. that morning. Thanks was extended to Torrey for the delicious smoked salmon fish he had flown here before the picnic. It was enjoyed for the both meals. After dinner the President Stephen Burke gave everyone a warm wel­ come and conducted a short period of business. As Debbie Blake and fami­ ly couldn't attend, Isobel Burke took over for the secretary-treasurer and read the minutes of last year's picnic. Il was decided to have next year's picnic al the same place on the third Sunday in August, calling it for 12:15 Family moves to area The community welcomes Andy and Margaret Lacroix of Sudbury who moved to the village on August 10 and look up residence in the for­ mer Dick and Maxine Marks house. Mrs. Lacroix is the mother of Joyce Marcuscia, Andy is her step-father. United Way committee sets goals The United Way Steering Com­ mittee for Huron County held its first meeting Monday, August 12 at Huronview in Clinton. In attendance were: Jim Switzer, Henry Krech, John MacKinnon, Jane Muegge, Frank Murch, Jill Pritchard, Darlene Prouse, Jack Riddell, Graham Brown, Mike Sully, Cathy Vida, Gloria Work­ man, Jackie Rankel, Mary-Anne Franken, Hugh Wilson, Glen Sauve and Dave Brown. The meeting was chaired by Dave Brown, Executive Director of United Way of Samia-Lambton. The committee was given plenty of information regarding how the United Way can work in Huron County. The committee was told of some of the findings from the pro­ ject study. There is a need for Unit­ ed Way funding in Huron County and there will be the support need­ ed to run a campaign. The Committee's goals are to: 1. Establish a Board of Directors. 2. Apply for a Registered Chari­ table Number. 3. Ensure a smooth transition from Project to operational. 4. Promote the formation of Huron County United Way. Some of the processes involved will be setting Allocation guide­ lines for possible member agencies and forming a campaign committee to canvass all areas of the County. p.m. to be eating by 12:30 sharp. The new officers are: President, Doreen McCall; vice-president, Frank Burke; lunch, Bev Stevenson and Betty McCall; sports, Shawna and Jason McCall. The afternoon was spent visiting and sports were conducted by Julie McCall and Vicki Gamble. Even a ball game took place in the ball dia­ mond. It turned out to be a perfect day for the picnic, everyone enjoying themselves outside. Alex Macdougall was welcomed during the afternoon when he dropped in on the picnic. He and his wife Barbara had moved to the for­ mer Art McCall farm a year ago. They are interested in the McCall homestead and are working to restore it to its original style when the grand­ parents lived there. Interested landowners in atten­ dance were Kathleen Beattie, Boyd Driscoll, and Kenneth Glanville. Mr. Glanville questioned the rea­ son for repairing the outlet pipe at Station 0+851 and that the cost should be the owner's responsibili­ ty- Mr. Kelley stated that the exist­ ing pipe was in poor condition and recommended replacing it. A by-law was passed to provide for a drainage works and for bor­ rowing on the township's credit the sum of $22,000 for the completion of the McCallum-Winthrop Drain. Council endorsed the resolution of Aidborough Township petition­ ing the provincial government to re-evaluate their policies and recog­ nize the economic and historic pri­ ority of the farmer's right to continue to maintain and use drainage ditches for purposes of draining and to have the right to construct new drains. Council also supported the reso­ lution of Euphrasia Township urg­ ing the Minister to amend the Development Charges Act by allowing small municipalities (under 5,000) to charge a lot levy of up to $1,000 per lot, without a study being done or without having to seek Ontario Municipal Board approval. A representative of the Seaforth Agriculture Society, Mr. Ross Ribey, was present to ask for a donation from the township or indi­ vidual members of council, for the purchase of a prize for the 1992 tractor raffle. Mr. Ribey advised that the event brings people into the area and that 1,452 tickets were sold for this year's raffle. The pro­ ceeds are to be used to expand the Society's facilities. The road accounts in the amount of $131,032.54 were approved for payment from the general account. Council authorized Road Super­ intendent Wayne Dolmage to have the box on he International truck sandblasted and painted at a cost of $324. Applications for tile drainage loans were approved for: Cone. 5, East Part 9, $15,000; Cone. 5, Lo 8, $5,000; Cone. 5, Lot 7, $11,200 Cone. 13, Lot 33, $3,900; Cone. 2 Lol 18, $20,000 and Cone. 7, Lot 9 $20,000. A by-law was passed for the bor­ rowing of $18,000 to complete the Pryce Municipal Drain. Two separate by-laws were passed for the completion of main­ tenance work on the Buchanan Municipal Drain. The first was for an amount of $6,000 to be bor­ rowed, while the second is for $5,100. Council were advised that repairs will be made to the lower portion of the Downey Municipal Drain with an estimated assessment of $172 for McKillop. Council reviewed the proposed numbering system for Walton. Council approved the recommen­ dation of the Walton Landfill Com­ mittee that the township of Grey exercise an option to purchase 15 acres from Harold McCallum. The week of September 29-Octo- ber 6 has been declared by McKil­ lop as "Waste Reduction Week". Council approved a voucher pay­ ment of $41,107.03.
