The Citizen, 1991-08-14, Page 7THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14,1991. PAGE 7. Girls find Young Company a great experience In good company Heather Morton, 19, of Belgrave and Kavan Smith, 16, of Burnaby B.C. are two members of Blyth Festival’s Young Company. Heather has been involved with the theatre every summer since 1979, while Kavan, who is the niece of Artistic Director Peter Smith, is plying her dramatic talents here for the first time. Each summer a diverse group of young people is attracted to Blyth Festival's drama workshops to be part of the popular Young Compa ny. This year, the group is much smaller than other years, with about 10 participants, and a somewhat older group as well. One of the company members is a veteran, having been involved with the the atre or the workshops for the past 12 summers. Another, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, is tak ing part for the first time. Heather Morton, 19, of Belgrave, and a student of native studies at Carleton University in Ottawa, began as a member of the youth workshops in 1979. For the past four or five years she has been employed with the theatre, working as a dresser, and as an instructor and director for the younger chil dren's workshops. Kavan Smith, is the 16-year-old niece of the Festival's Artistic Director Peter Smith. A Grade 11 student in Burnaby, her only expe rience on stage was in two school plays. She was involved in a theatre program five years ago, but didn't get a chance to act in the produc tion. When Mr. Smith approached his brother, Patrick, a professor of political science at Simon Fraser University, about letting Kavan come to Blyth for the workshops she was very excited by the idea, she said. The girls are very upbeat in their observations regarding the compa ny and the work they will perform. The production this year, The Polar Bear Swim is a collective work that will be presented in Blyth on August 15, 16 and 17. Heather, who will be acting for the first time in four years, says the play has a little bit of everyone's ideas about the environment in it. "We have done a lot of writing exercises, told stories of drcams, fables and monologues and from those we got the play. There's a common thread that runs through, but it's really an expression of all our feelings," she said. "There's a lot of everyone in it," adds Kavan. Casting isn't complete, yet, but we know basically we arc playing each other and what’s important to us." Heather notes that the company is comprised of an older group of teens, as well as a lot of new peo ple. "That's been nice. It’s a really good group and I think, though it is smaller, we are all very commit ted." Five members have been hired, she added, under the Envi ronmental Youth Corps. "We really clicked together right from the start,” said Kavan. "There were no cliques. Right away we got along well as a group." The group has been benefitted this year with more help from the main company, getting instruction and working on such things as articulating. The summer youth programs here are great for a couple of rea sons, Heather says. "There is a lol of organization involved and it helps to encourage creativity. I'm not sure where my career is going, but I think this develops a lot of positive aspects towards a lot of options. Il helps to boost your con fidence."
