Reid's visit to Seaforth in 1876 to visit Ontario landscape painter William Nichol Cresswell (1822-88) piqued his interest in painting and in 1878, he travelled to Toronto to attend art school. He later travelled to Philadelphia and Paris to study art. Many portraits of leading figures of Wingham and Kincardine which Reid painted in the late 1800's are missing. The Blyth Festival Art Gallery committee is making a spe cial appeal to art lovers in the area to contact the Blyth Festival at 523- 4345, if they have any information about Mr. Reid, his family, the architect Mr. Proctor, or lost George Reid portraits. A contemporary of Paul Peel, Reid is one of Canada's best known artists and art educators. Settling in Toronto, Reid pursued a career as a painter of pictures, portraits and murals. He was the first Principal of the Ontario College of Art in Toronto (1912-29) and is one of the founders of the Art Gallery of Ontario. His paintings are featured in he collections of the National Art Gallery (Ottawa), Art Gallery of Ontario, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, London Regional Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Art Gallery of Peterborough, Win nipeg Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Windsor, Royal Ontario Museum and the Government of Ontario. His father, Adam Reid, a Scottish immigrant farmer settled on a farm in the East Wawanosh area in 1840. His father was always determined to keep George from pursuing a career as an artist. When George finished his formal schooling in 1875, his father kept him busy on the farm for three years. Meanwhile Reid kept winning prizes for his drawings at the local fairs in the Wingham area - especially for his studies of horses. When George announced he was leaving for Toronto to go to art school, his father announced that he was under age and legally apprenticed him for three years to a local architect, J.B. Proctor. In 1878, Proctor's planning mill failed and he closed the office and moved to the United States, releasing Reid. Reid spent 22 months in Wing ham and Kincardine, from 1880-82, working as a portrait painter. Many of these portraits helped to finance his further art training.
