any other retailer does. The weekly
reports take him about 10 minutes,
he said.
That is why, though he and B.J.
were also sorry to see Marjorie
Humphries retire, they understand
the logic behind Canada Post's
decision. "I wish I had five jobs
like this," said Thys. "The remuner
ation paid for the hours worked is
fantastic. I could sit here all day
and only the odd person will come
in for mail service. It's costly to
keep the regular postal service
operating in these small places, he
said, adding that he thinks this will
eventually take away the power of
the postal union.
To fill the void left, when
Humphries' store closed Thys and
B.J. added grocery items and video
rentals to their available services.
They also sell consignment crafts
and hand-made items, in addition to
having an area where residents can
come in, relax and enjoy a cup of
coffee.
"This is nice, because you can
come in here on a cold winter
morning and have a coffee while
you wait for the mail to show up,"
said Mr. Little.
He and his wife Donna, who
moved here four years ago from
Waterloo agree that the service pro
vided by the retail outlet is fine.
"Thys and B.J. are doing a great
job," said Donna.
Another resident Kathy Sauerbrei
also saw no problems with the
change saying that the service is
friendly and efficient.
While the De Jongs are not
unaware of the benefits they have
gained from the added service, they
are happy they were there when
needed. "It's been a good deal for
us," said Thys. "There's no doubt it
has brought business in to our
store, but I think everyone is bene-
fitling with the increase in the ser
vice."
"We like the people here and it
was nice to be able to do this when
there was a need," adds B J. "To be
needed in a community is a good
feeling."

(Postal)Service with a smile
Friendly service has eased the transition to a retail postal
outlet for the residents of Walton, since the closing of their
regular post office last August. The new service is located
in the Walton Tea Room, which is owned by B.J. and Thys,
(pictured here selling stamps to Donna Little) De Jong.
