The Citizen, 1991-07-31, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 31,1991. Art deco quilts featured in Bainton Gallery Artist Ellen Adams has beautiful ly captured the elegance of Art Deco in her new exhibition of quilts, kimonos and other art objects at the Bainton Gallery in Blyth Saturday, August 3. The quilts in this exhibition were inspired by the elegant elevator doors of the period and Adams has skillfully translated these designs into soft fabric without losing the essential ingredients. Artist Ellen Adams will be present at the open ing of this new one-woman show on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Bainton Gallery, located in Blyth Memorial Hall. The show will con tinue until September 14. Curators Eunice Diamond and Jo Manning comment that “Art Deco was the rage of the 30s and refers to a spare, geometric form of design. Its use of long, curved, symmetrical lines influenced archi tecture, visual arts and the decora tive arts. Art Deco came about in reaction to Art Nouveau, which, by 1910, had become mannered and academic, with excessive ornamen tation. This spare style was a major influence in the architecture of New York City. Architects such as Ralph Walker designed the New York Telephone building, and William Van Allen, the Chrylser building.” “I have a real fondness for archi tecture of the period popularly called Art Deco,” says Adams. “In North America, this style is best exemplified by skyscrapers, and the technical development of high speed elevators was a major factor in making skyscrapers possible. Indeed, the success of an office building at that time was often determined by the speed, efficien cy, comfort and attractiveness of its elevators. The designs of all my quilts are based on elevator doors of such buildings. My hope is that after having seen the quilts, a view er will be intrigued enough to seek out the corresponding elevator doors and look at them with new respect. After all, one of the main points of art is to encourage the viewer to see and think about things differently.” Ellen Adams was bom in Toron to in 1951 and now lives in Ayton. Educated first in the Zoology Department at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver., she then moved on to work as a soundtrack editor in the film indus try, in Britain, and later, in Toronto. More recently, she acquired a diploma in General Design from the Ontario College of Art. The common thread linking these three pursuits is a liking and aptitude for precise work with her hands. From 1980 to 1990 she has had numerous exhibitions and received many awards. Her most recent commis sion was the design of the floor of the new Ontario Craft Council building in Toronto. Art Deco Quills, sponsored by Al Beecroft, Eunice Diamond and Joan Perrie is featured at the Bain ton Gallery in Blyth Memorial Hall from August 3 to September 14, 1991. The Bainton Gallery is open performance days Monday to Sat urday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and during intermissions. The Gallery is closed Sundays and admission is free.
