The Citizen, 1991-07-10, Page 23PAGE 24. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 10,1991. Brussels council briefs Council still dogged by canine problems The round-up of dog tags in Brussels showed there are consider ably more dogs in the village than village authorities knew about. Clerk-treasurer Donna White told council at its July 8 meeting that when the village's representative went door-to-door to sell the tags it was discovered that there were 130 dogs in the village, compared to the 94 the village office knew about. One dog-owner refused to buy a dog tag saying he would only buy when all other animals in the vil lage also paid licences. Council agreed that the dog bylaw enforce ment officer will lay charges if the owner does not buy a licence.**♦ Some village staff will be getting a retroactive eye-glass benefit package. Mrs. White explained to council that apparently the package had been in place for two years but nobody in the village office, includ ing former Clerk-treasurer Hugh Hanly, knew about it. The first knowledge of the program came to light when the insurance company called to see why the village hadn't been paying the premiums on the eye-glass portion of its benefit package for the past 17 months from Feb. 1990 on. The village was given the option of paying the back $500 in premiums or starting from this point on. Since some employ ees on the program have purchased several pairs of glasses in that peri od that they would be able to claim for, council decided to pay the back premium. Not all employees are covered by the new benefit.*** Council agreed to compensate Herb Stretton for repairs he had paid for to the sewer clean out near his west-end home. Mr. Stretton said the snowplow had slipped off the road and damaged water-con nections and took the top off the sewer clean-out as well as damag ing the lawn in the area. "I couldn't see it being Jeft in that condition and nothing was being done (to repair it)" he said. "It's not my property. I fixed your (village) property." He said he only wanted to be compensated for the $62.60 he had spent on the village's sewer clean-out. He had spent consider ably more on landscaping repairs but wasn't asking for compensation for that. Council agreed to pay him the $62.60 for repairs. Councillor Mary Stretton declared a conflict of inter est for this matter.♦ ♦♦ Council also gave final reading to the bylaw allowing for the closing of unused portions of Haliday and Queen streets west of the river near the area opened for development last fall. The land will be divided between Mr. Stretton and Hank TenPas. Councillor Stretton reported that the Brussels, Morris and Grey recreation committee has chosen a site west of the Community Centre for the new tennis court. Council approved the hiring of a contractor to start preliminary work for the construction after the recreation committee marks out exactly where it wants the court. The area will be excavated and filled with gravel but paving will be left until later after the area has a chance to settle. The tennis court was moved from its downtown area to make room for an apartment building.**♦ Councillors learned that changing regulations mean expensive times ahead for the Brussels Fire Depart ment. New regulations will require firemen wear protective suits val ued at $1000 each. Some council lors wondered how long communities will be able to afford their own fire departments as regu lations increase costs.*** Because of the Civic Holiday weekend, the next meeting of coun cil will be Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Down and out FunFest had its ups and downs for these youngsters in the sack race, part of the Saturday afternoon fun for kids at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre.
