Auburn Lions complete year The Aubum and District Lions Club recently completed its year under the direction of President Doug Chamney. Euchre tournaments were held in January and February as well as a Country and Western Dance in February. Crutches, a walker and a wheel chair have been lent out late ly to area residents who have tem porarily needed them. The Auburn and Londesboro Lions Clubs joined forces and held a Beef Barbecue on June 1 with all profits donated to the Hullett Township Recreation Committee. Legion Jamboree a huge success BY SANDRA JOSLING This year's Country Fiddlers Jamboree held on Sunday, June 23, was bigger and better than last year's. The Brussels Legion would like to thank all those who enter tained for the large crowd, and all those who worked behind the scene to keep them fed and happy. Also another thank you goes to Lloyd Warwick. Without his help and organization the day would never have materialized. Winners of this week's mixed darts were Bill and Dini Nethery, first; Mary Ross and Gord Jacklin, Four teens were hired to work in the Lions Food Booth al the Lions Community Park this summer. Lions Club members help out at tournaments, including the Hullett Recreation Committee's Co-ed Tournament on May 31 and June 1. One of the Lions Club's first pro jects 14 years ago was updated recently as new lumber was installed on the Lions bleachers at the ball diamond. In the last few months donations were made to the Huron Day Cen tre for the Homebound, Seaforth and District High School Marching Band, District A-9 Effective Speak- second. High shooter for the ladies was Mary Ross (112) and for the men, Wally Mason (106). Blind draw mixed darts are played every Monday night at 8 p.m. Results of the euchre held Wednesday, June 26 are as follows: high lady, Rosemarie Bishop; high man, Mel Jacklin; low lady, Dave Adams, ( playing as a lady); low man, Bill Nethery. Blyth's summer rec program tor youngsters, Kindergarten through Grade 8, started this past Monday under the supervision of five local young ladies. Heather McDonald, 22, Jody Sip- pel, 19, and Sherri Howson, 19, are the supervisory team along with help from Danielle McDougall, 15, and Karrie McClinchey, 18. For such a young group they carry impressive credentials. Heather is entering her third year at the University of Guelph where she is majoring in Child Studies. She eventually hopes to teach primary grades. Heather was employed with the rec program in 1988. Jody is attending St. Clair Col lege in Windsor. A student in the Child and Youth Counsellor field, she plans to work with Young Offenders when she graduates. Jody also worked in the rec pro gram in 1988. Sherri is in her second year at Mohawk College in Hamilton in the Child and Youth Counsellor program as well. She intends to eventually do art therapy through the education system. This is the first time she has been employed as a member of the rec program staff. Karrie McClinchey will be enter ing her first year at McMaster Uni versity in the fall, majoring in Business. This is her first experi ence with the rec program. The veteran of the job is also the youngest. Danielle McDougall, 15, was employed with the rec program last year and was a volunteer for some years prior to that. "I enjoy it because I really like working with the kids," she said. Danielle is entering Grade 11 at Central Huron Secondary School. The increase in staff this year was precipitated by parental con cern last summer. "Last year the format changed without increasing the staff," explained Heather. "Other years there were groups split into half day sessions but last year it changed so that all the chil dren came at the same time for a full day." That made it difficult for two supervisors to keep up with it ing Contest and Aubum Memorial Community Hall. In addition the Club made a $100 donation to the Lions Foundation of Canada, an organization whose major national projects are Canine Vision Canada, dedicated to train ing dogs to lead visually impaired Canadians and Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada, which trains dogs to respond to important sounds in the everyday life of hearing impaired people. With this donation of Life Membership into the Lions Foun dation of Canada was presented to Club President Doug Chamney. The Lions Club visited Bob Bat ty's Century Agricultural Centre north of Clinton earlier in the spring and completed the year with a Ladies' Night dinner on June 18 Jfappy 191 ft tyirtfufay Spanty FROM THE GANG all and a decision was wisely made to increase the staff for this sum mer's program. "The increase in staff will make a big difference in how smoothly this summer will run," said Jody. The group already has activities and themes planned for the summer and is trying to make the program more structured than in previous ^ears. "Being more structured it will be not just fun but a learning experience for the children as well," said Sherri. The first week's theme will be environmental and the group is working with the theatre workshop children on some of the projects. Youngsters will be participating in a clean-up and a play. All arts for the week will be completed using trash. There will be a "least litter lunch" contest and a game called the "eco-system food chain".The arts and craft segment of the pro gram has also been improved thanks to a donation from the Blyth Lions Club. "The main thing is for the chil dren to have fun, but if we can teach them something as well that’s great," said Heather. "We have a really good group to work together this year and hopefully we will pro vide the kids with lots of entertain ment. I am quite optimistic about how the summer will go." Also planned for the youngsters are field trips, one to the Children's Museum for the younger group, and for the older ones a trip to a water park. All five supervisors will be in charge of the outing foi the littlest ones, while the oldei children will have a day off. The group also hopes to visit the Nature Centre at some point. "I am looking forward to it. The program should be a lot of fun because we have a lot of good stuff planned," said Karrie. There are still vacancies avail able for the rec program and late registration can be done at the Clerk's office. The session runs until August 16 from 9-4, Monday to Thursday and from 9 until noon and afterwards they attended the Blyth Festival's production of "Bar bershop Quartet". The Club will be busy shortly as they work on the President's project for this year. The club will be installing a "Welcome to Aubum" sign as well as their unique "Aubum Weather Station" in the village. This should be enjoyed by both residents and visitors to our village. Congratulations to new President Gordon Daer who will lead the Club for the next year as the mem bers continue their service work. fttappy 85tfi tyirtfufay Roy Cousins from your family and friends on Friday.
