County accepts
Huronview
tender
The Huronview North project
outside Brussels moved one step
closer to reality Thursday when
Huron County Council accepted the
tender of Granville Constructors
Ltd. and approved the negotiation
of a contract with the Mississauga
company.
The tender price is $245,000 less
than the original estimate for the
building and the Huronview Com
mittee of Management recommend
ed to the county council that that
money be put into a contingency
fund for the project.
But Lionel Wilder, Reeve of Hay
Twp.noted the budget for the
Huronview redevelopment already
has a $250,000 contingency fund
built in and he wondered about the
need for a further contingency.
But Howard Armstrong, Reeve
of Stanley Township and chairman
of the Huronview committee point
ed out the tenders for the Huron
view Central project at Clinton
won’t be opened until July 17 and
the additional contingency might be
needed if those tenders arc higher
than expected
Reeve Bill Mickle of Exeter said
having been through a recent build
ing project, he knew about the pos
sibilities of contingencies but he
felt the motion to accept the tender
should be changed to leave the
money in the budget at this time
but be reconsidered alter the open
ing of the next tenders. He said he
didn't want to tie anybody's hands
but he didn't think the money
should be ear-marked for contin
gency at this time. The motion on
the setting up of an additional con
tingency fund was deferred until
the September council meeting.
Reeve Brian McBumcy of Turn
berry asked about supervision of
the project. He recalled that the
county hired a project director for
the construction of the Huron
County Museum and wondered if
similar arrangements would be set
up for Huronview.
Nigel Bcllchambcr, county clerk
administrator, said pending the ten
ders on the next phase of Huron
view redevelopment there would
likely be a recommendation coming
to the council on full-time supervi
sion on the sites.
The county still has not received
final approval from the Ministry of
Community and Social Services for
the plans for the building but that,
Mr. Bcllchambcr said, is not unusu
al.

trial period
A Brussels couple will be given a
six-monlh probationary trial period
to use their Brussels property for a
used car-parts business without
cluttering the yard.
Marie Kumm and Dan Schaefer
attended Village Council meeting
to get permission to use their Fred
erick Street shop for a location
where used auto engines will be
taken apart and restored. Al no
lime, Mrs. Kumm said, will there
be old vehicles in the yard. Mr.
Schaefer said there were currently
six vehicles inside the building but
nothing ouisidc.
Reeve Gordon W’orkman said
council didn't want to stand in the
way of the couple but didn't warn to
get into a mess as it had in the past
with Mrs. Kumm's late husband
Ted when neighbours complained
about the junked vehicles in the
yard.
But Mr. Schaefer said there will
be no car bodies or anything else
lying around ouisidc and he said
lhal repairs to the building would
be undertaken so it won't look "so
ugly".
The property is zoned Rl, resi
dential but because it was being
used prior to the zoning bylaw
coming into existence, il is a non
conforming use.
Councillor Bruce Hahn said "The
only thing we're concerned about is
the past history" with "cars here,
and cars there" in the yard. Mrs.
Kumm said the concern was under
standable and the condition of the
property had led to a lot of argu
ments. But Mr. Schaefer was also
concerned about the problem and
he was easy to talk to if council
came to him with complaints in a
reasonable manner.
Councillor Dave Hastings sug
gested the six-month trial period
and the rest of council agreed.
