The Citizen, 1991-06-19, Page 28PAGE 28. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1991 Former Turnberry Central students honour retiring teacher A well-known local educator, Hugh Sinnamon, was honoured with a retirement party hosted at Tumberry Central School on Fri day, June 7. Mr. Sinnamon has served as a classroom teacher for the past 36 years: from 1965 until present at Tumberry Central; from 1959-1965 Obituaries at Lower Wingham; from 1958 - 1959 at West Wawanosh; and from 1955-1958 in Morris Township. Owing to Mr. Sinnamon's pas sion for horseback riding, it was fit ting that he arrived at the retirement barbecue by horse and buggy (chauffcurcd by Grant Vin cent). Over 200 present and former students, staff members and com munity members, joined the retire ment celebration with Mr. Sinnamon. The current principal of Tumber ry Central, Floyd Herman, served as Master of Ceremonies for a delightful programme of shared memories from Mr. Sinnamon's career. Former colleagues, Paul Statia, Al Harrison and Marilyn Elgic led things off with a tribute in song. Celebrated writer, Alice Munro, who was recently awarded the Canada Council Molson Prize for lifetime contribution for writing, told tales of attending Wingham Public School herself as a student as this is where Mr. Sinnamon also received his elementary education. Mr. Sinnamon's entire Grade eight class then arrived on stage as Student Parliament Prime Minister, Shawn Fair, presented a gift to their teacher. Other speakers included former custodian, George Tervit, and for mer principal, John Mann, who presented Mr. Sinnamon with a beautiful composite sketch (drawn by the Musgrove children) of three school buildings significant to Mr. Sinnamon's career. Laughter reigned supreme when Catherine MacDonald and Mary Macintosh introduced the "perfect bride" for Mr. Sinnamon. Follow ing this, Nancy Corrigan, on behalf of the community, gave sincere appreciation and a gift to Mr. Sin namon for his years as an educator.
