County council wants deposit on whiskey, wine bottles Huron County councillors have called on the province to insist on a refundable deposit on all bottles sold by the Liquor Control Board Outlets. Lionel Wilder, Reeve of Hay Township raised the issue after noticing a letter received by the county Waste Management Steer On the march Brussels Legion Pipe Band leads a parade of Legion members and Oddfellows to the annual Decoration Day service held at Brussels Cemetery Sunday afternoon. (OMMRI) The agency said it felt it could now recycle over 70 per cent of contain ers from LCBO stores and urged councils to press the provincial government to complete the Blue Box network as a logical way of recovering LCBO containers. But Reeve Wilder felt this was exactly the wrong direction to take. Recycling wasn't going to slop all the whiskey and wine bottles thrown at signs and mail boxes on rural roads, he said. A deposit on bottles, however, would encourage people to return the bottles and even if they were tossed away, somebody else would collect them for the money. "Let’s get off our butts and get the Ministry (of Envi ronment) to get a deposit on the bottles." But Hulletl Reeve Tom Cunning ham, who is chairman of the Rural Section of the Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) warned it •will be difficult to get the message through to Ruth Grier the Minister of Environment. After his associa tion met with Mrs. Grier he felt there is a lot of pressure on the Minister from the glass industry and from within her own ministry to put LCBO containers through the Blue Box program. Ministry officials argue that taking the Grey Township council awards gravel tender At the regular meeting of Grey Township Council on June 3, Council accepted the lender of R. Farrish Const. The Farrish tender, amounting to $37,824.50 was the lowest of nine received. Construction is expected to commence early in July and resi dents in the vicinity are urged to exercise caution during construc tion. ROMA argued for a deposit, he said but "She didn’t seem to be lis tening real well." Reeve Cunning ham argued that rural municipalities should continue to make the point that discarded LCBO bottles are a problem in rural areas. Council passed the motion of Reeve Wilder for the refundable deposit but even he sounded doubt ful it would work with the govern ment.
