American media paves way for American sales
Continued from page 5.
American products they see on the
screen.
How to keep the trojan horse
outside the gates of the city is a
problem all countries face. Some
have tried it by subsidizing their
own cultural industries or by set
ting quotas on how much foreign
content can be on their screens but
down the road this isn't going to
work. Down the road this trojan,
horse is going to be able to fly right
over the walls around the city.
Satellite broadcasting will mean
that countries can't control what is
seen in their own country because
satellites beam programing to any
one, anywhere in the world without
local government control. Il is the
American cultural industries that
will control the airwaves. Even
news is being shaped by American
satellite stations like CNN.
This American domination
wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for
the fact it is so blind. Americans
are so inward looking that for them
looking out on the world is like
looking at a one-way mirror reflect
ing only themselves and their own,
sometimes distorted view of the
world.
Unless Canadians and other
countries in the world find ways to
fight back, they stand little chance
of keeping their national personali
ty, let alone build markets for their
own products. Ideally, the global

Carmen Klaus became the first
member of the Mailland Motivators

To receive C.T.M. recognition, a

this manual has specific objectives
to help the speaker in their speak

After Carmen had given her 10th
speech to the club this past Monday

Scouts have
busy year

behind Rainer Saur's house. The
boys built their own shelters and
slept in them.
A highlight of the year for the
Scouts was a camp at Dorchester.
This camp had 1900 registered.
Very appealing activities were
available for the boys such as
archery, BB rifles, repelling tower,
etc. The boys exchanged addresses
with some American Scouts. The
scouts raised the money to pay for
this camp by holding a car wash.
The Cubs and Scouts planted
trees for Canada, and were treated
to a barbecue by the recipients of
the trees, Mr. and Mrs. Rick
Archambault.
A good time was had by all al
Benmillcr Camp.
Blyth had a new group this year.
The Venturers formed in August
and were well under way before
registration in September. The
group has sent one or two Ventur
ers to each group committee meet
ing where they have participated in
a very meaningful way.
Greg McClinchcy, president of
the group, is one of the four boys
from District planning on attending
the World Jamboree in Korea this
summer. Greg spoke to the Blyth
Legion about the formation of the
group and his upcoming trip. The
boys had several local camping
weekends, including a winter camp.
The boys invited Paul Ross, chap
lain to some of their activities.
Venturers participated in Fun
weekend and Benmiller Camp.
They also attended a camp in Sar
nia. The Venturers raised all the
money themselves to buy their
camping equipment. They com
bined with some Brownie Moms
and managed a very successful
Duck Dinner for Valentine's Day.
Group Committee had a success
ful Apple Day in the fall. All sec
tions sold Scout popcorn in the
winter. The group assisted the
Legion Auxiliary with serving al
Lions Club banquet. A Scout-
Guide Week banquet was held in
February. Trees were planted in
April and a bake sale was held on
the main street.
The group thanks Lions and
Legion Representatives, Alex Blair
and John Battye for their support
during this scouting year.
