Sports Belgrave Squirts lose 14-3 to Wroxeter The "A”team The Woodstock Gumbys beat out the B-Line Boomers from Howick, 16-8, to take home the "A" championship trophy at the Brussels Optimist slow-pitch tournament this past weekend. Weather perfect for bowlers’ tournee The first tournament for the Brussels Lawn Bowling Club was held Thursday afternoon with per- feet weather. It was an optional pairs tournament and the 10 greens were full. Wroxeter downs Brussels The Brussels Juvenile Boys team opened their 1991 ball season Fri­ day night in Wroxeter and although they held early leads of 5-2, 8-3, and 10-9 an eight-run seventh inning outburst lead the hometown Royals to a 17-10 win. Highlights for the Juveniles included a grand slam by Scott Johnston. Sunday night in Moorefield the Juveniles again jumped into early inning leads of 4-01, 9-1 and 11-1 enroute to a 11-5 win. First base­ man Mike Alexander easily cleared the right field fence in the opening inning to start the Juveniles on their way to victory. Andrew McCutcheon took the win with Scott Johnston throwing two and a third innings of shutout relief. The Juveniles play in a five-team league consisting of the Monkton Juniors, and Intermediate teams from Wroxeter, Arthur and Moore- field. Their home opener is Friday night at 9 p.m. against the Wroxeter Royals. Bly th soccer team loses 2 On May 30 Blyth travelled to Wingham to meet the Lucknow team. This proved to be a good match. Lucknow scored the first two goals. After half-time Blyth came out with a a little more spunk. With hard work, Michael Ansley set up Zeb Irving for one goal and Brent Hazel grove for the second goal to lie the game. With the play going both ways and only two minutes left, Lucknow scored another goal to win 3-2. On June 3, Blyth hosted Goderich B in Belgrave. This again was a challenging game. Goderich continued on page 14 First prize went to Elmer Murray, Clinton with three wins 49 and a plus of two. Second went to Jack Fisher, Lucknow, three wins 43 and a plus of one. Third went to Stuart Bryans, Mitchell three wins, 37. The others were two game win­ ners. Fourth was Les Douglas, Brussels; fifth, Walter Westbrook, Mitchell; sixth, Helen Haines, Mitchell; seventh, Joe Higgins, Mitchell; eighth, George Hyde, London; ninth, Don Haines, Clin­ ton. Consolation went to Jack Broughton, Atwood. Bowling is a wonderful sport and the club needs more local people to participate. Bowling lakes place Monday and Thursday evenings starting at 7 p.m. Come out and try it. The next tournament is July 4. Belgrave Squirts got behind early and never recovered when they vis­ ited Wroxeter June 6. The home team scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never relinquished the lead as they went on for a 14-3 win. David McBurney scored a run for Bel­ grave in the top of the second but Wroxeter came right back with two runs in their half of the inning. Belgrave was blanked in the third but Wroxeter scored once. Neither team scored in the fourth inning but Belgrave pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth as Adam Gamiss scored and Jamie McCallum whacked a home run. Wroxeter left no doubt about the win, however, when they scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. David McBurney and Jere­ my Campbell shared the pitching for Belgrave with David McBurney striking out the side in the fourth. Belmore visits Brussels June 13 at 7 p.m. Mosquitoes split first two games Brussels Mosquito soccer team split its first two games, losing to Wallace and beating Listowel. Despite losing 4-0 to Wallace on May 29 by a 4-0 count, the team did have a strong second half. On June 5, the team displayed good forward pressure for the whole game to defeat Listowel 5-3. Andrew Straitten, Chad McCallum, Corey Newman and Corey Camp­ bell, with two, provided the scor­ ing. Listowel managed only one shot on net in the first half. The next game is Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Grey Central School in Ethel.
