Heating your pool efficiently Healing a swimming pool takes a lot of energy - the equivalent of about 12,000 kWh of electricity for an average (5.5 x 11 metres) inground pool over a four month healing season (lhe figure assumes the use of a pool cover for 12 hours a day). With over 20,000 swim ming pools being installed in Cana da each year, pool owners have a responsibility, and a personal finan cial stake, in using their heaters wisely. HOW CAN YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR POOL HEATER? Choosing an energy-efficient model is an essential firSt step. All four of the most widely used types of pool heaters (natural gas, propane, fuel oil and electric) are energy guzzlers. Heat pumps cost considerably more to buy and install, but consume far less energy. Solar healers also cost more, but their operating costs are virtually zero because lhe fuel that powers RATES 20 words or less only $3.00. Additional words 12c each. In a recent study, solar heaters were found to have lhe lowest overall cost over a five-period (a figure that includes purchase, installing, operating and maintenance costs). Over a 10-year period, the solar heater cost a third less than a comparable gas-fired system. For an increasing number of pool owners, solar heaters provide a reli able, cost-effective and pollution- free alternative to systems that use non-renewable forms of energy. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY. And, people arc recycling more of them all the time. According to the Orga nization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), mem ber countries import over $8 billion in recycled metals a year, while exporting almost the same value. In North America, about a third of the aluminum we use is recy cled, and that proportion is expect ed to increase by 10 per cent over the next decade. Even now, recy cled metals account for over half the continental consumption of stainless steel and over two-fifths of our iron, carbon steel and cop per. In Canada over 50 plants and companies are organized in lhe recycling of metals. Canada imports and exports over $2 billion in recyclable metals. The economic reasons for recy cling are obvious. Most of lhe materials for metal recycling come from two types of scrap; leftovers from manufacturing, like machined shavings; and products that are no longer serviceable, like old cars. As the population grows, so does man ufacturing and with it the supply of scrap. But, economics doesn't tell the whole story. During recent decades, lhe growth in population and indus trial production has touched off something new: a widespread con cern for the environment. And this concern has also played a part in lhe rising demand for recycled met- " PITCH-IN CANADA!
