Ozone a threat to your health
Fun fundraiser
A little bear donated by Bainton's Old Mill helped raise
money for Children's Hospital of Western Ontario in a draw
held at the Blyth Branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce. Betty Battye, (left) won the bear, presented by
Jayne Marquis.
Blyth to get Scout signs
At the May 1 meeting of the
Blyth Group Committee, it was
decided that the committee would
like to supply town council with
Scout signs to be incorporated into
the new town signs being con
structed.
It was reported that the Bake Sale
April 27 brought in $125.50.
Thanks was extended to Blyth Dec
orating for their support, to John
Greidanus for his time and the use
of his tables, to the mothers of the
boys who supplied the baking, and
to the residents of the community
who came out to buy the goodies.
Rev. Paul Ross was present to
speak to the group. He spoke of the
reconstruction of Jerusalem in 600
B.C. when it was common practice
to build a defensive wall around a
city. In today's society we no
longer do this, but if we look close
ly enough we do have our own
blockades. Stairs, for example are
an impediment to wheel chairs. In
relation to scouting, when the boys
are camping with other groups,
each pack or troop sets up some
kind of demarcation line from their
neighbouring group. There may be
no harm in that. On a broader view
of the Scouting program, however,
barriers are unacceptable. Ideally,
the program should be available to
all interested boys. Every effort is
made locally, through the generous
donations of the sponsors, fundrais
ing events run by the group com
mittee, and individual fundraising
efforts by the various sections to
ensure that hopefully, no boy is
excluded because of financial costs.
All groups are winding up their
year's programs. Beavers have fin
ished 'Friends of the Forest', and
are making plans for the Beavoree.
Three Beavers are eligible to move
from Pond to Jungle.

Those "lazy, hazy" days of sum
mer aren't all they're cracked up to
be. In fact, experts say the "haze"
you see on summer days could be
dangerous to your health: it's actu
ally ground-level ozone gas that, in
high concentrations, can harm
humans, plants and synthetic mate
rials.
And unfortunately, the amount of
ground-level ozone in Canada is
increasing. However, reports Envi
ronment Canada, governments are
tackling the problem, and you are
part of the solution.
OZONE'S DARK SIDE
Ozone, a gas in the atmosphere,
has good and bad sides.
Ozone surrounds Earth and acts
as a protective layer that filters out
ultraviolet rays. Which is why the
world is so concerned about its
ozone’s depletion.
Ozone also occurs naturally at
ground level, and is present in
small amounts everywhere. In these
natural quantities, it's harmless.
Ozone becomes a problem in

camp.

higher quantities. Nitrogen and
hydrocarbons, pollutants emitted
mainly by automobiles and indus
try, form ozone when they interact
with sunlight.
This means high concentrations
of ground ozone (smog) are usually
formed in highly-populated and
industrialized areas, and also down
wind from these cities. (Wind can
move ozone thousands of kilome
tres - so even if you live out in the
country, you're not spared from the
problem.) If there's little or no wind
to carry away some pollutants, the
cities are worse off.
How can ground-level ozone hurl

• harm lung tissue;
• make you more susceptible to
infection;
• aggravate chronic respiratory
conditions;
• cause coughs;
• cause headaches and irritate
your eyes.
For example, an Ontario health
study revealed that a 70 per cent
increase in hospital admissions for
respiratory complaints is associated
with periods of high ozone levels.
(It's estimated that seven percent of
the population, or about one in 14
people, are sensitive to ozone.)
