Bly th department gets pumper/tanker Key to protection Hullett Township Reeve Tom Cunningham, chairman of the Blyth and District Fire Area Board presents the keys to a new fire truck to department Chief Paul Josling. The department recently took delivery of the new truck, a unique combination of tanker and pumper that was designed for the Blyth department. Blyth and District Fire Depart ment tdbk delivery of a new truck recently, one that has no similarity in any area department. Fire Chief Paul Josling said last week the new truck is a combina tion pumper and tanker, serving as the perfect addition to the depart ment in providing additional capac ity to both the tanker and the pumper on the department. The new truck replaces the department's 1968 pumper which had served as a backup for the department. The truck was seldom used, however, because at a rural fire it was hard enough to find enough water for one pumper, let alone two. The new truck is 90 per cent tanker, with a capacity to carry 1500 gallons of water compared to the department's number one tanker which carries 1650. But the truck can also provide backup capacity for the pumper through the pumps installed on the truck that can pump 420 gallons per minute compared to the 840 that can be pumped by the number one pumper. Chief Josling said as far as he • knows the truck is unique. It was designed by the Blyth department and manufactured by Robica-Fore- man Tank Ltd. of St. Marys. Walton landfill to charge for old tires Based on recommendations from the Walton Landfill Site Commit tee, Grey Township Council passed a by-law on May 6 which establish es disposal fees for used tires at the Walton Landfill Site. The Committee recommended that tire disposal fees be established as a number of other neighbouring landfills had implemented fees. The fees, along w|th proper identifica tion will ensure that tires will be received from the residents of Grey or McKillop townships only. As well as providing added capacity for both pumping and hauling water, the new truck adds another valuable element of versa tility to the department. It has pump-and-roll capabilities meaning it can pump water while it is mov ing along. Ordinary pumpers must stop and disengage the transmis sion before getting power to the pumps. Pump-and-roll capability is particularly important for firemen when fighting grass fires which cover large areas of ground. The fees range from $3 for pas senger tires without rims to $20 for tires in excess of 20 inches in diam eter. The fees will cover the present cost of disposal by a tire recycling company. The fees will come into effect on May 18.
