Youth to
compete in B.C.
Ben Barnes, of RR5, Brussels,
will be travelling to British
Columbia for one week to compete
in a National Debating Contest.
Mr. Barnes, who is a Grade 13
student at F.E. Madill in Wingham,
placed fourth in the provincial con
test in Hamilton recently, advanc
ing him to the Nationals. The
cross-examination and parliamen
tary rounds debated at the provin
cial level were: "Should the chief
executive officers of Canadian
industry, that pollute the Great
Lakes be subject to mandatory
imprisonment?" and "Should the
onus for cleaning up the Great
Lakes be on industry rather than
government.?'1
In preparing for debates, students
must be well-informed on both
sides of an argument as they do not
know, prior to the event, which
argument they will present.
Mr. Barnes, who has been on the
debating team at Madill since its
inception, has always been one of
its strongest debaters. He, along
with fellow Madill student Sarah
Brophy, were two of five debating
students chosen at the end of the
Regional debates last February.
Their combined scores, that day
helped make F.E. Madill's team
the top debaters.
