Phone 887-9487 UCW guest speaker talks on education through music The regular meeting of the Evening Unit of Knox United Church, Belgrave was held Tues­ day, May 7 al the home of Mrs. Donna Shaw. Leader Mrs. Wilma Higgins thanked Donna for offering her home. Wilma read a Mother’s Day poem. Twenty-four members and one visitor answered the roll by each recalling a memory of her mother. Annie Cook lead the worship using the theme “Continuing”. Hymn 579 and 383 were sung. Mrs. Jean Cook read scripture from Matthew 13 and 1st Corinthians. Mrs. Barbara Anderson read a med­ itation on “Endurance” as exempli­ fied by the disciples. It was decided to attend the June meeting of the Huron County Can­ cer Society, Clinton in lieu of the 13 tables at euchre Thirteen tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave, May 8. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. John King; low lady, Mrs. Eva McGill; most lone hands, Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse; novelty lady, Mrs. Ross Eaylor; high man, Den­ nis Leddy; low man, Gordon Lout- tit; most lone hands, Sillieb Harvey; novelty man, George John­ ston. Mrs. Muriel Coultes thanked the group for the corsage she received when she was installed as London Conference U.C.W. president at Sault Ste. Marie. Mrs. Louise Bosman introduced Marilyn Elgie, the guest speaker. Marilyn based her talk on the “Edu­ cation Through Music” a teaching course she has attended for the past nine years. She emphasized the need to develop enthusiasm for projects and general life. Childhood memories create a community spirit. We have all experienced “Mountain Top Experiences” which catch our interest to be shared with others, she said. They lead to thinking positive thoughts. Several appropriate songs were enjoyed. The benediction was repealed. Grace was sung and lunch was served by Mrs. Lorna Cook and Mrs. Muriel Coultes. Donald Coultes of Brandon, Manitoba visited briefly this week Youth to compete in B.C. Ben Barnes, of RR5, Brussels, will be travelling to British Columbia for one week to compete in a National Debating Contest. Mr. Barnes, who is a Grade 13 student at F.E. Madill in Wingham, placed fourth in the provincial con­ test in Hamilton recently, advanc­ ing him to the Nationals. The cross-examination and parliamen­ tary rounds debated at the provin­ cial level were: "Should the chief executive officers of Canadian industry, that pollute the Great Lakes be subject to mandatory imprisonment?" and "Should the onus for cleaning up the Great Lakes be on industry rather than government.?'1 In preparing for debates, students must be well-informed on both sides of an argument as they do not know, prior to the event, which argument they will present. Mr. Barnes, who has been on the debating team at Madill since its inception, has always been one of its strongest debaters. He, along with fellow Madill student Sarah Brophy, were two of five debating students chosen at the end of the Regional debates last February. Their combined scores, that day helped make F.E. Rev. and Mrs. John Roberts spent the weekend at Niagara Falls attending the Ontario Gymanfa Ganu (Welshe Hymn Singing Festi­ val). The Canadian Orpheus Choir, under the leadership of Lyn Harry, performed in the Saturday evening concert. Dr. Haydn James of Lon­ don, England, directed the hymr singing on Sunday and Rev. Johr Roberts and Rev. Dr. Gerwyr Davies (Toronto) led the devotions. NOTICE WALTON LANDFILL SITE To the residents of Grey and McKillop Townships, please be advised that effective May 18th, 1991 the following fees will be collected for tire disposal: 1) Passenger car tires, light truck tires and implement tires less than 16" diameter 2) Truck tires and implement tires 16" in diameter but less than 20" 3) All tires 20" in diameter and greater $20.00 Payment must be made at the landfill site before tires are accepted. Proper identification, i.e. landfill permit card, must also be presented. This policy has been adopted to ensure tires are accepted from residents and businesses of the Townships of Grey and McKillop only. Father House administered the first communion to Sherry Zettler and several other young people. Following the ser­ vice all of Sherry’s relatives returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Zettlers for a deli­ cious lunch. Mrs. Elizabeth Procter, Belgrave and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Procter, RR 5, Brussels visited with Rev. and Mrs. Douglas Madge, May 6 at St. Joseph Hospital, London where Rev. Madge is a patient. Mrs. Irene Desjardine of Grand tend visited last Wednesday with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell and boys. On Friday, May 3, Mrs. Eliza­ beth Procter of Belgrave and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Zettler, Sherry, Amanda and Alicia, RR 4, Walker­ ton attended a recital which was held in Mildmay. Sherry played a piece on the piano along with her teacher, Mrs. Derwin. Several little children tapdanced. perfume made of pure nard, poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair”.
