Prize-winning students perform
On April 14, Blyth Memorial
Hall was the setting for a large
audience for the annual "Spring
Concert" put on by the students of
Gail Lear, A. Mus. R.M.T. of Lon
des boro.
Some 46 numbers on the pro
gram went on to the Walkerton
Festival, held April 25 to May 2.
Twelve entries earned first place,
nine earned second, while a further
14 received third place certificates.
Special congratulations to Andrea
Grant, daughter of Ray and Hilda
Grant of Wingham. She was hon
oured to be the recipient of a schol
arship from the Festival with her
mark of 89. Andrea is just 17 years
old and doing the first half of her
Association Teachers this June.
Andrea previously won a scholar
ship for organ lessons last fall.
At the recital some of the per
formers enjoyed adding special
sound effects from the synthesizer
to their piano solo such as organ,
panpipes, harpsichord, viabra-
phone, .snare drum, violin or'even a
bird sound. Playing solos were:
Lindsay Hay, Janet Bosma,
Melanie Bouman, Lori Wilts,
Michael Lyons, Joel Thomas,
Steven Haak, Roz Hartman, Amy
and Elly Wilts and Sarah Christie.
Kelly Bosman played in duct with
Kerri Szusz. Also playing solos that
went on to the festival were Becky
Woodall, Brent Thomas, Jessica
Bokhout, Erik Ramakcr, Mark
Nonkes, Cindy Gibbings, Andrea
Ramakcr, Karen Trick, Lesley Pike
and Rachel Bylsma.
Using two pianos proves a popu
lar combination for many students
and lots of fun. Any ensemble play
ing increases the students' aware
ness of correct rhythm and balance
in tone. A quartette consisting of
Emily Parr, Cindy Gibbings, Karen
Trick and Krista Black earned a
second place certificate at Walker
ton. Other piano-duos placing first
were Luke Stuart and Matthew
Woodall, Shauna Hemingway and
Kristen Crawford, Karla Stacey and
Jennifer Szusz, Julie Lisle and Car
olyn Pike. Rachel Bylsma and
Mark Nonkes earned a second and
Krista Black and Karen Trick a
third.
Trios are also popular and fun.
Three sets received first place:
Ansley Simpson, Julie Lisle and
Carolyn Pike; Kimberley Schcdlcr,
Marianne Pike and Mary Vaudry;
Lesley Pike, Mary Lisle and
Andrea McBride. Second place
went to Audrey and Emily Parr and
Cindy Gibbings. Third place by
Janet Lisle, Deborah and Jennifer
Pike.
Others playing ducts on one
piano were first place: Deborah and
Jennifer Pike and Andrea Grant and
Amy Bateman. Second place duels
were Mary Lisle and Lesley Pike;
Ansley Simpson and Maria Gib
bons; and Kimberley Schcdlcr and
Marianne Pike. Earning third were
Bethany Stuart and Rebecca
Woodall and Janet and Julie Lisle.
Solos earning first place were
given by Glcnna Buffinga, Karla
Stacey, Andrea Grant, Ansley
Simpson and Stephanie Bokhout.
Second was earned by Stacey
Buffinga, Rachel Bokhout and
Craig Fair. Thirds were given to
Shaun Fair, Bethany Stuart, Sara
Lyons, Matthew Woodall, Luke
Stuart, Rowan Kerr, Carolyn Pike
and Willena Ramaker.
