The Citizen, 1991-05-08, Page 23PAGE 24. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 8,1991. ' ideas to be sent to SpicerCitizens Citizens' concerns about the lack of leadership in the country, eco nomic stability and education will be relayed to the Spicer Commis sion on national unity after a meet ing in Blylh Wednesday night. Peter Smith, Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival, who hosted the meeting, said he will be writing a letter to the commission using some of the quotes from the nearly one dozen people who were present for the round-table meeting. Mr. Smith said he had been inspired to host the meeting after hearing one of the commissioners, Laurier Lapierre had spoken to a meeting of the Professional Associ ation of Canadian Theatres which he had attended. He said the gener al tone of the meeting was very cynical toward the Spicer Commis sion before Mr. Lapierre spoke, with people complaining about the cost of the commission and gener ally feeling there was little hope for the country anyway. But Mr. Lapierre said something that rang true, Mr. Smith said. "Hope is as much reality as despair", the Com missioner said. He had invited Canadians to "hijack the Forum. You can do it. If you're interested in saving the country, you can do it." That, Mr. Smith said, prompted him to call the meeting. Adrian Vos, Blylh-area writer said the essence of any country is the people, not the landscape. Take Canadians anywhere and they would create the same Canada they have here, he said. Brussels resident Beverley Brown said it was loo bad "you couldn't bottle what they've done in Blyth and sell it across Canada." She pointed to other communities like Belmore where the community decided a new roof was needed on a community building and they organized a syrup festival to raise the money. The festival is still going. Bill Dow, a member of the Blyth Festival company said he thought people have that kind of spirit in many parts of Canada: "they just can't decide on the roof'. Some of those present bemoaned the lack of patriotism in Canada, saying that even though they wouldn't want to see Canada as extreme as Americans are, they'd like to see more pride in things like the Canadian national anthem. The anthem is often nearly ignored at Canadian events, they pointed out. Brussels man charged over PCB release The Ministry of the Environment has charged Calvin George McEachern of Brussels with failing to comply with a Director's Order. The charges allege that, on or about March 31, 1990, it was dis covered that the defendant failed to cover PCB-contaminated soil with clean clay soil and failed to register the PCB waste on the title to the property. An order was issued Jan. 28, 1990 after an investigation revealed Mr. McEachern was peri odically burning scrap ballasts which contained capacitors, releas ing PCBs into the soil.I Mr. Vos said it's when you get out of the country and hear the national anthem that "you get a lump in your throat that you never gel here." j The Huron County Alzheimer Advisory Committee Presents a LEN FABIANO workshop "MOTHER I’M DOING THE BEST I CAN" TUESDAY JUNE 18, 1991 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM at the GODERICH TOWNSHIP HALL HOLMESVILLE For complete details call 482-7405 or 482-7865 REGISTRATION FEE 40 REGISTRATION DEADLINE MAY 28, 1991 “I Seaforth Minor Sports BINGO EVERY MONDAY NIGHT 7, Q rv p ft fl Seaforth & District • OU ■ IVI Community Centres /^$2,000 IN PRIZES Plus SHARE THE WEALTH MUST GO JACKPOT $750.
