Flying high Jim Armstrong marked his 40th anniversary as a pilot at a special surprise party held by his wife Leona on Friday night. Jim began his lessons in a Piper Cub at Goderich airport on May 1, 1951. The plane here is a Pietenpol, which Jim built himself. It took seven years to complete and he has been flying it for 23 years. Man marks 40 years of flying Jim Armstrong of Brussels marked a special milestone this past weekend. BY SANDRA JOSLING On Saturday, April 27 Bob Rich­ mond and Eric Ross of Branch 218 Brussels finished first in the Provincial Legion dart doubles held in Toronto. Bob and Eric will now represent Ontario al the Dominion Legion dart finals May 17-19. Dominion finals will be held at Branch 25, Vernon, British Columbia. This will be the first time a team from the Brussels Branch has competed at this level. Congratulations and good luck. Winners of the Monday night mixed darts are as follows: Dave Adami?, Gord Jacklin, Bill Nethery, first; Deb Cann and Barb Elliott, second. High shooter for the ladies was Colleen Martin (138) and fore the men Gord Jacklin (138). Start­ ing Monday, June 3 will be a Mixed dart blind draw summer league. Everyone is invited to play. Winners of the Wednesday night euchre are: high lady, Dorothy Dil­ worth; high man, Gord Jacklin; low lady, Myrle Bowes; low man, Ross Alcock. Most lone hands for the ladies was Beryl Smith and for the men, Willis Knight. The next euchre night will be Wednesday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. All are wel­ come to attend. It was May 1, 1951 when a then 19-ycar-old Jim began flying in a Piper Cub at Goderich Airport. The first plane he owned was a Tiger Moth, which he had for 7 1/2 years. The next plane Jim owned he constructed himself. The Pietenpol was seven years in the making and Jim has been flying it for 23 years. When the weather is good, Jim flies back and forth to his job as a teacher at Mitchell and District Brussels People Members of the immediate fami­ ly of Miss Jill Smith of Owen Sound visited on Sunday, May 5 to help Jill celebrate her 16th birth­ day. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pearson, Brussels; Miss Lucy Frecbree, Listowel; Mr. and High School. He rents an airstrip aboulonc mile outside of Mitchell. Besides the Pietenpol, Jim is part owner of a Minicab and Luscombe. To residents of Brussels Jim's hobby is no secret. It is not unusu­ al to see his plane flying over the village on sunny, summer week­ ends and Jim enjoys sharing his passion with others. He recently donated a two-hour flight to the Maitland Conservation Founda­ tion's dinner and auction. Even after 40 years the novelty of flying has not wom off. The winner of this week's Club 284 draw for $100 was Keith Mul­ vey and Doug Sholdice. Clerk Donna White pulled the winning ticket at The Citizen office on Sat­ urday. Proceeds from the draw will go to St. John's Masonic Lodge #284 for the purpose of community bet­ terment. A third draw will be made next week.
