VIA CHARTER BANK 4 INVESTMENTS Appointment Six people from Central Huron Secondary School received awards at the Excellence Education banquet in Holmesville Wednesday night. The recipients were (left to right) Ruth Linton, long-time health nurse and students Vivienne Stephens, Angela Reid, Fayanne Love, Paul Jewitt and Rick Howson. The Blyth Festival and three area and former area students received awards at the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation's Excel­ lence in Public Education Awards Night, Wednesday. Awards were handed out to stu-' dents and community members from the five secondary schools in the county plus Bluewater Secondary School at Goderich. Blyth Festival was given a special award for its work with schools and students in student drama. The Festi­ val helps sponsor the Central Huron Drama Festival each year as well as providing experience for students through its Young Company each summer. It has assembled a library of skits for schools to choose from. It produces a study guide for students attending the Festival's annual tour­ ing production. Earlier this year during the Festi­ val's writers workshop, Peter Smith, Artistic Director, took a playwright and actors to the Seaforth District High School for a play reading to let the students see how a play is devel­ oped. Receiving the award for the Festi­ val were President Carol Irwin, Past president Sheila Richards and board member Marie McGavin. Award winners Rick Howson of Blyth was one of five Central Huron Secondary School students who won awards. He was praised for his combined musical and sports activities .The grade-12 student is a member of the volleyball, basket­ ball and field hockey teams as well as the school choir, ensemble and Con­ cert Band. He is president of the school's Athletic Association and is a member of the Inner Student's Coun- Man gets 60 days for driving drunk A Lis towel man was sentenced to 60 days in jail and had his license suspended after pleading guilty to driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. The court was told that William E. Gemhaelder had been arrested after after an accident on July 28, 1990 at County Rd. 16 and the Ethel road. A car had failed to stop at the stop sign coming from Ethel, had crossed the road and ended up in the ditch. Mr. Gemhaelder was beside the car when the police arrived. When Mr. Gemhaelder was given a breathalyser test, that produced sam­ ples that measured 240 and 269 mg. The court was told that Mr. Gem­ haelder, 57, had previously had a 30 day jail sentence and three year pro­ bation for drunk driving. Judge Hunter sentenced him to 60 days in jail and prohibited him from driving for another three years. cil. Rick is the son of Bill and Susan Howson of Blyth. Paul Jewitt of Londesboro was another of the Central Huron win­ ners. The grade 12 student has been a member of two Huron-Perth champi­ onship basketball teams as well as the track and field and cross country teams. On top of all that he is President of the Student Council this year. Paul is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Jewitt of R.R.l, Londesboro. Top athlete A former Blyth resident Vivienne Stephens was the third of the five CHSS winners. The OAC (Grade 13) student has had an outstanding high school athletic career as a perennial winner in the 100 metre and 200 metre sprints setting many new regional records. Last summer she won two first and a second at the Ontario Summer Games. She is also a member of the Dance Club, Wright Club, is a prefect and is scorekeeper at volleyball games. She is the daughter of Joyce Stephens of Clin­ ton. Other winners from CHSS were Fayanne Love and Angela Reid and long-time public health nurse Ruth Linton. Winners from F.E. Madill were Wingham residents Lori Belanger, Christa Crawford and Glen Taylor, Lucknow resident Sarah Brophy and Gorrie resident John Greig as well as teacher Shirley Smith and school sec­ retary Mary Aim Henderson. Winners from Goderich District Collegiate Institute were students Paula Vanderburgh, Brian Lane, Sheri Hord, Becky Penn and Eliza­ beth Ball as well as basketball 1 and volleyball coach and alumni member Heidi Elliott. Winners from Seaforth District High School were students Morgan Murray, Melissa Whitmore, Lisa Henderson, Wendy Lammerant, Gerald Losch Brussel* Auto Sales & Service Ltd.
