F.E. Madill teacher visits
Club 284 makes first draw
BY HEATHER SOMERS AND
WENDY THOMPSON
On Friday, April 5 the Grade 7/8
class had a visitor from F. E. Madill
Secondary School. Our visitor was
Mrs. Linda Elston; she teaches
advanced math classes and guidance
classes. She gave us two work sheets,
one involving integers and the other a
problem solving sheet. Mrs. Elston
also gave some very important, valu
able points for the grade 8 students to
know for next year.
At the high school the teachers are
very strict about homework. In the
English class, if the homework that
was assigned the night before is not
done your mark drops one grade. At
the beginning of the year Mrs. Elston
gives everyone 30 free marks. Every
morning she checks to see if the
homework is done and every time it
isn't done she takes five marks off the
30.
The grade eight students have been
to one orientation night at the high
school in January. They are also
planning to go again in May and

On Friday, April 5 we had a visitor
from Kenya, a small country in
Africa. Ali Bakaaba gave us a slide
presentation with plenty of interest
ing information for us to learn about
Africa.
This week we interviewed Mr.
Higgins, an area resource teacher. He
lives in Goderich and has been teach
ing for nine years.
He travels to three different
schools, East Wawanosh, Wingham
and Brussels. He comes to Brussels
on an alternating Tuesday and
Wednesday. One day a week he
spends testing. On this day he could
be at any school in the county.
Mr. Higgins specializes in speech,
language and learning exceptionali
ties. He assists with programs, does
testing and documentation. He has
consultations with teachers having
problems with a particular student or
class and then gives the teacher some
ideas to solve the problem.
The grade 8 Quest class is planning
a kite flying competition. Two grade
8 students will be working together
lage. The Masters are living in the
trailer park.
Mark and Bonnie Gropp and Julie
McCall of Brussels, Don Blake of

with one class to help them build
unique kites. At a later time the class
es will get together and fly their kites.
The grade 8 "Quest" class has been
busily preparing for the upcoming
skip-a-thon for the Heart and Stroke
Foundation. Every morning and
afternoon recess the grade 8 students
take turns leading skipping practice
with the other classes in the school.
We have a fine group of skippers at
this school.
