FIVE YEARS AGO APRIL 23, 1986 Alison Chamney was awarded second prize in her class of step dancing at the Stratford Kiwanis Music Festival. The West Wawanosh council was about an hour into its meeting when smoke was seen from the nearby mobile home of Alex Til- brook. Mr. Tilbrook had to be rescued from the trailer, which was engulfed in flames. The Lucknow Fire Department was called. The old township hall beside the trailor caught on fire from the sparks and ' burned to the ground. The old steel safe containing Assessment and Tax Collector’s rolls dating back to 1860 was recovered, but heavy damage had been done to the records. The staff for the Brussels swimming pool’s first summer were hired. Members of the staff were: Karen Phillips, Karla King, Bonnie Evans, Cindy Evans, Sharon Scott and Kim Fritz. Enumeration starts today Continued from page 1 and French-language school sup- porters/electors; to prepare lists of potential jurors; to assist munici palities and school boards with their planning; to prepare the Ontario Population Reports; and to update assessment records. The enumeration is being con ducted by the Property Assessment Program of the Ontario Ministry of Revenue. It is done every three years, in the same year as munici pal elections. "Every Ontario resident can ensure stronger local government across the province by participating in the enumeration process,” said Honourable Shelley Wark-Martyn, Minister of Revenue. "And returning the form proper ly ensures that, if you are entitled to vote, your names gets on the voters’ list,” Ms. Wark-Martyn stated. This is only the second time the enumeration has been done by mail. Mailing ensures that resi dents have time to examine the form, read and understand the instructions, and ensure that the information is accurate. In addition to the actual mail-out forms, an intensive province-wide advertising campaign will begin on April 24. This campaign - on TV, radio and in newspapers - will inform Ontario residents that the enumeration is underway, and will be conducted in most of the languages spoken in Ontario. This year, as well, Statistics Canada will also be delivering a questionnaire to each household, for the federal Census is taking place, just after enumeration. The Census takes place every five years and doesn’t coincide with the enumeration very often. In fact, the next time will be in the year 2006. The Census and the enumeration collect different kinds of informa tion and, for reasons of confiden tiality, cannot be combined.
