Mike Harris getting the PC’s back on track In appreciation Steve Sparling, President of the Huron County Progressive Conservatives presented Ontario’s PC leader Michael Harris with a gift at the annual banquet held in Blyth on Wednesday, April 10. Mr. Harris was the guest speaker and gave an inspiring talk about getting the party “back on track”. Getting the party back on track is the goal stressed by Ontario’s Progressive Conservative leader Mike Harris when he visited the Huron riding as guest speaker at the annual banquet in Blyth on April 10. Mr. Harris told the crowd that it was not going to be easy to reaffirm what the party stands for at a time when most politicians are viewed negatively by the voters. He said, however, that by getting their own house in order and standing firm on party principles, they can turn things around. “By turning around a party situation that we inherited, you and I, we’re going to prove to the people of Ontario that we are worthy of their support. In four years we will be in a position to be viewed in stark contrast to both the Liberals and the NDP’s big spen ding, big taxing, fiscal incompe tence.” Mr. Harris told party members the times ahead would be challeng ing and exciting ones for the Ontario Progressive Conservatives. The party, he says, is now on the road to recovery and is much more united than they have been for a number of years. He explained that two years ago if he had run for party leadership and won then led them into an election, took 20 seats and came third there would not have been the support shown him now. “You’d have said that’s not what we do with leaders that lose,” he said. He feels he has been given an opportunity that others in the past have not received and sees this - the ability to put the past behind them, get ready to move forward and work together - as a sign of maturity on the PC’s part. Because of this the party, he says, is now experiencing a period of some stability and is developing clearer, defined objectives that will successfully sell their principles. “We’re not asking people to vote for us because it’s our turn to govern. We are saying we want people to vote for a party that has some values and has some princi ples and is prepared to stand up for them and to stick to them regard less of what the polls say. That’s unusual today in politics.” He went on to say that the party must be consistent with these beliefs be cause the values of the PC party and the test of time, of family, of rewarding initiative, of providing not everything for everybody, but opportunities for everybody. The public is still looking for those values, they just haven’t seen them or believed they were there in a political party fpr the last while,” he said. To gain the people’s trust, Mr. Harris said the challenge for the party will be in not sending mixed signals. It should, he said, not take a stand on popular ideas it doesn’t believe in and should resist tempta tion to gain instant popularity on instant issues, something he feels it hasn’t done well over the last decade. The game plan to get the party back on a sound fiscal footing, on a second policy direction and an organizational footing before the next election is in place, said Mr. Harris. The party is in a recession and good people have been laid off. “It’s not easy to do, but we have to control our expenditures to get our own financial house in order.” The party needs “short-term pain”, he says, so they can be on sound financial ground two years from now. He stressed a need for a stronger volunteer network and more self-reliance within the rid ings as well so the party will grow stronger and by next election its affairs will be in order. “We’re going to be a force to be reckoned with, increasingly over the next 1200 days. We will challenge the myth the government can somehow tax and spend our way to prosperity by offering fair, affordable and long-term social and economic policy that is based on a foundation of principle and com mon sense. We’re going to show we can provide the alternatives to build a strong and vibrant Ontario.” A new spirit giving of Quality Service & Selection makes Hamm’s Your Best Deal Great Savings on These Used Cars & Trucks.
