Blyth Scouting group hears about activities by Kim Ferguson and Erica Clark Did you see the Science Fair displays at Blyth Public School? As you all know, Science Fair is an annual tradition for grade 5 through 8. As you can imagine there are the groans of “Oh, not again!’’ and “Why do we have to do this?” But, there are the “yeahs” when we get class time to view and ask the “scientist” questions. As you all know, tw6 lucky people get a chance to try to go on to the Canada wide competi tion. This year it is Kimey Rich mond (gr. 8) and her “Insulation” project and John Armstrong (gr. 7) and his project on “Conductors”. We wish them luck. However, all of the projects were well done and everyone is a winner. LET’S GO FLY A KITE by April Van Amersfoort, Leanne Bell and Cappy Onn On February 20 the grade five class of Blyth Public School studied aerodynamics. They built paper airplanes and flew them in the gym. On March 6 and 28, 22 students from five schools went to the Blyth arena for a kite-making enrichment program. They built kites, big and small. On March 28, Mr. and Mrs. VanDerlippe from Kincardine came. They are kite-making and flying experts. They showed many of their kites. They used to own a kite store. They showed different materials and told about other people who make kites. We also made kites of our own. We flew them on the field behind the arena. There was a lot of wind that day and the kites flew high. VISUAL NOVEL by Toni Richmond and Jennifer Brigham In a different approach to read ing, the grade six class is discover ing a new way to enjoy books with the use of a visual novel entitled, eight class of B.P.S. sold daffodils for the Canadian Cancer Society. The selling began at 9:40 a.m. when the firt half of the class split into pairs and began selling on the main street of Blyth. Then at 10:30 the first half of the class came back to school and the second group went out. The second group sold until 11:30 a.m. and then came back to the school. At 11:30 a few more people went out to sell the remaining daffodils. A special thank you to everyone who supported the Cancer Society by purchasing a bouquet of daffo dils. VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT by Kimey Richmond and Kim Ferguson Part of the Grade 8 “Quest” program is to do a service for our community. One of our many services took place on Saturday, April 6, when grade 8 hosted a junior (gr. 5 and 6) co-ed volleyball tournament. In preparation for this, the grade 8 students were very busy writing letters to schools involved, looking for volunteer referees, buying prizes and food, making beautiful welcoming banners and organizing the schedules. The schools involv ed were: St. Joseph’s, Colbome, Central Perth, East Wawanosh and Blyth. All the schools played very well to the end. In the end, East Wawanosh placed fifth; St. Joseph’s, fourth; Central Perth, third; Colborne, second; and first place went to Blyth. Our first volleyball tournament was very successful and we hope it will turn into an annual event at our school. GRADE 3 ACTIVITIES by Jerry Mason and Brad Montgomery For the last month the grade three’s have been doing different activities in language classes. Each student has made a book. Some of the books are joke books, informa tion books, secret adventure books, story books, pop-up and accordion books. Mrs. Little and Mrs. Web ster have been helping the stu dents. They are making them to show a real-life author who will visit the school in May. At the April 3 meeting of the Blyth Group Committee, a policy was finalized regarding the accum ulation and distribution of money in the World Jamboree Fund. This year the Jamboree is to be held in Korea. The next one will be held in Holland in 1995. March was a busy month for the Beavers. On March 19 they had an “Owl Prowl” and coloured a spring picture. March 26 they worked on a fluffy rabbit craft, and on Saturday, March 30 they enjoyed an educa tional tour of Ray Storey’s sugar bush. April 2 the boys talked about farming. The topic for the Blyth Beavoree this year will be the Yukon. Scouts are currently viewing a series of films on camping and canoeing. The Venturers enjoyed an outdoor camp on the last weekend of March break. They tapped some maple trees and made their own maple syrup. With only two months left in the annual Scouting program the lea ders were reminded that financial statements and end of year reports of activities for each section are due the end of May. The next activity planned is the Bake Sale April 27, 9 - 11 in front of Lawrie Decorating on Queen St., Blyth. Janet Jenkinson, District Presi dent, was present at the meeting. On her own initiative she has been attending Group Committee meet ings around the district to answer questions, to collect feedback, to inform, and to act as a liason between local committees and Dis trict. She was thanked for taking the time to do so. The next Group Committee mee ting will be on May 1 at 7:30 p.m., Blyth Public School. “Anne of Green Gables”. The book was written by Lucy Maud Mont gomery. Lucy was born in 1874 and died in 1942. The book was first published in 1908. Recently Mont gomery’s book has been made into a visual novel with seven episodes. After watching each episode, the class will complete their own written summary and two activi ties. On April 4 we started the first episode of “Anne of Green Gables” it was a very good Part 1.
