The Citizen, 1991-04-10, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1991. From the Minister’s Study We can accomplish anything with God’s guidance BY REV. STEVE WEBB KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, CRANBROOK Allow me to introduce myself since I am new to this column. I share in ministry in the two point charge of Knox Presbyterian Church, Monkton and Knox Pres byterian Church, Cranbrook. I have been with these two congregations for a little over four years and look forward to this addition to our ministry. When first asked to take part in this column I was not sure what to expect or what was expected of me. It is a new experience for me and I guess I am somewhat apprehensive and challenged by it. What do I write, what do I say, how much do I say and what do I want to leave with you the reader? What if I say the wrong thing, what if I make a mistake? I guess it’s like anything that we do, if it’s new we hesitate. We’re afraid of mistakes, afraid of our own abilities or sometimes our perceived shortcomings. Some thing like visiting a new neighbour. We can visit an old friend and do so comfortably but a new neighbour, that’s different. We might make a social blunder, we might say the wrong word or we might even embarrass ourselves. Or how about being asked to drive for the friendship club or taking Joe’s aunt Em to the airport for him? We’ve never done it before and we’re not sure whether we really want to. 1 know what you’re thinking, you already do these things and you don’t have any trouble doing it, you never have had, so what am I going on about. Okay, these are pretty weak examples. How about prayer? Prayer to open a meeting, prayer for a public lunch or dinner. Again, no problem right? What about a prayer with a lonely person in a hospital room, a scared teenager or maybe even a with a close friend? I Sometimes a little more difficult. Or what about spending time with a bunch of kids on Sunday morning, as a teacher? Not so difficult, if you’re comfortable with that type of thing. How about a youth group, young adults, or the terror of terrors for many people, a bible study? I don’t mean just attending it, I mean leading it. It’s a little more difficult when we are asked to do more than we are used to doing. We willingly participate at times but leading and doing can be different. Being the leader demands a lot from a person and ’it means that they have to be able to overcome their fears and appre hensions. It’s not something that everyone can do, right? Wrong. We can do it. You can do it, especially if you remember one very important thing, you do not do it on your own. No matter what we are faced with and no matter how hesitant we are to do it or how fearful, if we know that it is a service to God and to others, we will have God’s help and guidance. It becomes a matter of trust and faith in God, a turning to God for help, and knowing that we can accomplish anything with the strength and abilities that God grants to us when we ask. We are still within the Easter season and I would like you to think about Christ as he prayed in the garden of Gethsemane. “Father, if ANGLICAN CHURCH OF CANADA REV. DAVID FULLER, B.A..M. DIV. Easter 03 Brussels 11:15a.m. Speaker challenges congregation Mary Mae Swartzentruber, pre sently of Brussels, challenged the congregation at Brussels Mennon- ite with her message based on Matthew 28: 16-20. Doubting and discipling in re spect to “the great commission’’ was the centre of the sermon. God does not expect us to be perfect, but he does expect us to be disciples. Doubts do not alter the authority of Christ; for God’s love for us is bigger than our doubts. God will always be with us, even in times of doubts. We are not intended to go and disciple, but to disciple as we are going -- in everyday life, as we go about our daily business. Linda Campbell led the worship service and Mervin Lichty led the congregational singing. The youth group had a games night at Valdez’s on Saturday night and supper and a meeting at Hiller’s on Sunday evening. The Prayer and Praise group met at the Church through the week for their regular meeting. BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMEDCHURCH HIGHWAY4, BLYTH DR. W. H.
