Forms in mail The 1991 edition of Health and Welfare Canada’s Guarnteed In come Supplement (GIS) and Spouse’s Allowance renewal pro gram is now underway. The 1991 application forms are now in the mail to over 428,000 Ontario seniors. Individuals must apply each year because benefits are based on the previous year’s income. The Guaranteed Income Supple ment is a monthly payment added to the basic Old Age Security pension of a person who has no other income or a limited one. The Spouse’s Allowance is paid to pensioners’ spouses and widow ed spouses between the ages of 60 and 65, who meet residence and income requirements. The annual awareness effort is designed to encourage recipients to renew their applications. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 1991. PAGE 25. Easter Seals campaign underway The Easter Seals Society has been helping children with physical disabilities since 1922. To aid the cause the Brussels and Blyth Lions Clubs have launched their annual direct mail appeal to raise funds for the Easter Seals campaign. Co-ordinator of the Brussels club Tim Prior said he has placed coin boxes in stores and to date has had a resounding response to the distributed mailers. “In just one week we have received about $1,100 which is almost as high as last year’s overall figure.” Lloyd Sippel of the Blyth Lions said the campaign there is just beginning and he expects a total tally by mid-April. Mr. Prior said that he has been impressed with the impact the envelope has. The colourful depic tion on the envelope has been drawn by Easter Seals children and Mr. Prior said he received a letter from a young person telling him how nice they thought it was that disabled children had been the ones to draw the pictures. “It shows the envelopes really attract attention.” Mr. Prior also said that one donation had been sent in from a 12-year-old Qrvrviofbino ho f«»1t wac an “awfully nice thing for a child to do.” At the March 18 meeting of the Brussels Loins Club, Mr. Prior challenged all the members to match his donation. He too, ex pects to have a total tally by mid-April. Half of the money raised, in the Brussels and Blyth campaigns goes to the Easter Seals Society, while the other half goes to help a disabled child or children in the area. Mr. Prior says there are presently two or three Brussels- area children being helped by Easter Seals funds, while Mr. Sippel said there is presently one child in Blyth receiving help through the program with more on the case list for this year. If more than the 50 per cent is needed the Lions Club need only request it from the Easter Seals Society to get it, Mr. Prior said. About four percent of the funds also comes from the provincial government. * ?
