Brussels Sprouts take home the WOAA championship Saturday the Brussels Sprouts travelled to Bayfield for their first playoff game at 11 a.m. against Zurich. Brussels started out slowly as their first goal came at 12:49 when Ian Thompson scored from Stephen Todd. Brian Oldfield scored an unassis­ ted goal at 4:59. Ian Thompson scored to round out the first period with the Brussels boys leading 3-0. Brian Oldfield and Ian Thompson Hockey huddle Elma-Logan goalie Dale Wagner dives to stop the puck, while players, #12, Mike Bromley of Brussels, and #3 Chris Pettapiece and #9 Nicky Hulley of Elma-Logan scrambled to get it in this game in Brussels on Wednesday. Brussels knocked out the Elma-Logan team in two games, taking home the Bantam WOAA Group championship title. Sports Atoms defeat Zurich The Brussels Atoms trounced Zurich in two straight games during the second round of WOAA Houseleague playoffs. The , team will now go on to play Clinton. On Sunday, March 17, Brussels played host to Zurich in the first game of this best of three series. Brett Fischer opened the scoring getting the only Brussels goal of the first period. Late in the second period Jason Kellington scored the second Brussels goal off assists from Scott Clarkson and Clint Fischer. Corey Bragg opened the scoring in the third period with assists by Jaimie Thomas and Jason Kellington. Then Scott Clarkson widened the Brussels lead with just over two minutes remain­ ing, scoring unassisted to bring the game to a 4-3 finish. In the second game Brussels travelled to Zurich on Wednesday, March 21 and defeated the home team by 5-2, thanks in part to the excellent goaltending job done by Corey Campbell. Leslie Elliott scored the first goal assisted by Jaimie Thomas and Amber Ruttan. In the second period, Corey Bragg scored the second Brussels goal off Jason Kellington and Jessie Hutchins. Zurich held back the Brussels team until the third period when the team came on strong scoring a total of three goals. Jaimie Thomas set up Jessie Hutchins, then Amber Ruttan scored off a pass from Scott Clarkson. The last goal was scored bv Leslie Elliott off assists from Jason Kellington and Corey Bragg. scored unassisted goals to increase their lead to five.' Brian Oldfield scored again at 2:48 with the assist going to Chris Coulter. Ian Thompson scored his fourth goal of the game at 9:51 of the third. Phil Affolter and lan Thompson both scored unassisted goals. Game two was set at 4 p.m. against Blyth. Brussels opened the scoring at 12:12 as Ian Thompson scored on a pass from Chris Coulter. The Brussels boys kept on working hard as Robbie Ken- scored at 11:22 on a pass from Nolan Krotz. Ian Thompson scored the next two Brussels goals with assists going to Matthew Elliott and Marc Fischer. Novice Reps end season Clinton Novices travelled on March 21 to Blyth to play the Rep team. The hometown boys played well and skated to a 4-0 win. Continued on Page 18 Blyth got on the scoreboard with 1:33 left as Matt Anderson scored to cut Brussels lead to 4-1. Phill Affolter opened the scoring in the second period with assists going to Brian Oldfield. Blyth came back with another goal. Phil Affolter scored another Brussels goal at 2:36 on a pass from Brian Oldfield. Chris Coulter scor­ ed with 48 seconds left in the second to give Brussels a 7-2 lead after two periods. The final goal of this game came at 7:53 of the third as Chris Blake scored with the lone assist going to Matt Elliott. Final score was Brus­ sels 8, Blyth 2. This advanced Brussels to the WOAA championship game against Stephen Township. This game promised to be a very fast and entertaining hockey game. Matt McCall was superb in the Brussels net making many saves until his team got on the score­ board at 9:59' as Brian Oldfield scored an unassisted goal. Chris Coulter rounded out the scoring in the first period as he scored an unassisted goal at 3:01 to give the Brussels boys a 2-0 lead after one period. The second period saw only one goal as Stephen Todd scored from Chris Coulter at 11:41 of the second period. The third period started with Stephen Township pulling out all the stops, however, Ian Thompson scored his 50th goal of the season to give Brussels a 4-0 lead. Final goal of this game came with three minutes and 20 seconds left as Ian Thompson scored with assists go­ ing to Chris Coulter and Stephen Todd. This completed the game with Brussels Sprouts winning the WOAA Tyke championship by outscoring their opponents 23-2 in the tournament. The Brussels Sprouts have done a remarkable job this season as they only lost one game and tied one game. Well done boys!
