MVCA issues safety reminder The Maitland Valley Conserva tion Authority (MVCA) has issued a reminder about the hazards that can be posed by streams and rivers as spring approaches. Parents are particularly urged to warn their children of the dangers of playing along frozen or flooded water courses. Warm temperatures cause the ice on streams and rivers to become thin and weak, leaving it unsafe for walking, skating, or snowmobiling. Melting snow leads to high water levels, and dramatic increases in the speed of water flow. Even small drains and creeks can become deep and fast moving. The temperature of water at this time of year is between one and three degrees Celsius, or 33 to 35 degrees fahrenheit. In water this cold, a person rapidly loses the co-ordination of arms and legs. To help make for a safer spring time, the MVCA suggests everyone stay away from watercourses, both large and small. Royal Homes calls back workers Manufacturing operations at Royal Homes in Wingham began Monday in time for work on spring production. Royal Homes Ltd., the largest modular home builder in Canada, is also calling back employees from seasonal lay-off to begin spring production at its Peterborough plant on March 18. A total of 105 plant and site employees will be returning to work. According to Pieter Venema, vice-president, the slow down in the home building industry has not affected Royal Homes to the same degree as others in the industry. He says demand has increased for Royal’s energy saving “R-2000 plus” technology. Four new dealer ships have been added in Eastern Ontario and there is continuing interest from Israel for Royal to export homes to help solve their housing crisis, says Mr. Venema. Donation Cameron Ross, seated, presented a cheque to Lions member Tim Prior on behalf of the Brussels-Walton Trailblazers Snowmobile Club towards the Easter Seal campaign. When a donation to Easter Seals is made through a Lions club member, 50 per cent of the funds will be used to help a child in the area. This donation, presented on March 1 proved timely as this month kicks off the Easter Seals campaign.
